Default carb'd 4.0

Has anyone on here ran a Carb on a 4.0? Just got a free engine, but want an easier swap. Any thoughts?

Maybe becasue the 4.0 was never designed to be carbed? You would have to find an upper intake manifold to support a carb (The 2.8L might work) but I doubt it. Good luck though. Not something I would do. There isnt ANY advantages for doing the conversion but I can think of A LOT of DISadvantages.

You can't just take a 4.0L OHV or SOHC fuel injected engine and slap a carb on it. It doesn't work like that.

were there any 2.9 carbed motors back in the day...?

I think youd need a distributor also. Dont know if the 4.0 has the hole. I think the cam is geared for it tho, could be wrong, probably am.

First you were going to put in a Cummins diesel, then a blower from a Mustang, then you were giving advise about porting 4.0 heads, then it was a turbo.

What are you about 12?

I'm pretty sure the cam is NOT geared for a distributor.

And no, the 2.9 was not carbed. MPFI.

I wish you all the best trying to turn a 4.0 into a carbed beast, since I can't think of any way you can do it. You'd be better off swapping in a carbed 302.

I'm just going over different ideas. The 4.0 would be free but would require a new harness to switch to a 2wd transmission. Just throwing ideas out since I have not started anything as of yet. Since just about all of my ideas have been done, I figured those people would post, not asses

Tom Morana sells what appears to be an adapter for a carb, not enough info on the site to know what all needs done - but apparently it can be done. But it's one of those things that if you have to ask....

I know what direction I would take, but I can't say if it's necessarily the right one as far as the distributor. I don't have a 60 degree V6 (or the money to waste) to try and experiment with, but it would be a fun project if you could get it going. Hope you know a good machinist.

You didn't specify what transmission and year, but you would want a manual with this combo. Auto A4LD simply wouldn't work right. 60 degree v6 C5 bell on a C4 may be do-able, but no over drive, which would just plain suck.

I'm leaning more for a 5.0 into it, My only worry is passing emissions, as a 5.0 didn't come from the factory and won't pass even with all the emissions parts on it. But I can register it in a different county so I don't have to worry about it.

Why wouldn't it pass? Just because it isn't the stock engine doesn't mean it can't pass. If you install it correctly, I don't see why it wouldn't.
