It depends on the state and how nice the inspection guy is.. Putting a V8 in a Ranger I'm sure isn't legal in probably many states/counties.

Im going to go ahead and correct that for you Tommy2. You may put ANY engine in ANY vehicle as LONG as it meets the chassi's ORIGINAL emissions equipment. For example, If you have an EGR, PCV valve, and Evap tank on your ranger now, you can run ANY damn engine you want if it has those same emissions components or more. Hell I could drop a stroked 460 under the hood of my ranger if I so felt.

Can you tell I just got my inspection license?

None of this makes any sense. State law does not regulate what engine is allowed in what vehicle. If you properly install a properly functioning engine and all of its properly functioning components, including it's emissions control components, and it passes the test, then that is all that is required.

every state is different, i know some states the motor that goes in has to be of the same year and make (ford to ford, GM to GM ect) and have all the emissions systems intact. but other states, like mine you could drop a tank engine in if you could fit it and it would be legal. no inspections FTW! lol

Perhaps. Though I would love to actually see that in writing. It doesn't make any sense.

Bingo. In Missouri you can only use an engine from the same year or newer (at least that was the law a few years back when I lived there). How would the inspection guy know? More than likely they won't care - but you may run into a jerk every once in a while.

Again, like I said - every state, county has their own rules. Some have no inspections.. Others are fairly strict. But if you do a clean job of the engine swap and deal with a lenient inspector - you can probably get away with it in the majority of places without too many problems.

The bottom line is there are laws and they vary from locality to locality.

Humph. Well I concede being owned. But I maintain it's retarded.

In utah it has to be an original model engine same year or newer. I could do a 4.0 or 3.0 and be ok. A 302 or diesel would not pass regardless of equipment installed.

wrong, i live in utah and talked to the guys at the OFFICIAL inspection shop in spanish fork(i think it was spanish fork). you can put a 302/350 or whatever in it, but you must meet all the original emisions requirments. then after it is all done you need to take it to the county official shop and have them inspect it to make sure it meets the requirements, then once they pass it the first time and give you some kind of cirtificate/exemtion or whatever then you can start taking it to any emisions shop again. i know this becasue ive thought about doing a v8 swap a few times.
