most likely a OHV, the SOHC did not come out until 2001, so unless the motor was swapped it should be the older OHV 4L

if the truck is stock you have a 4.0L OHV with 95TM heads, 6 bolt flywheel.

also FYI you have your acronyms all messed up

there is no SOHV... what you mean is SOHC = single over head cam

the OHC is short for SOHC.. you want to say OHV = over head valve.

100% swap the motor wiring ECU

they are not even close to being the same motor.

^ the block is entirely different because the SOHC has the camshafts in the heads and the OHV has the cam down in the valley (just above the crank).

im not trying to be an ass, im just pointing out a fact...

^ correct they arnt even close they share some common things like header gaskets but that's where it all ends. Any one with basic motor nollage can firgure this out. One is a push rod motor one is a modular motor

And im not trying to pick a fight. but have you guys torn these motors apart? The blocks are damn damn damn close. yes i will agree the heads are certainly different. But the block casting is simply an evolution.

The point im trying to make is that the 4.0sohc is an evolution of the design from the 4.0ohv.

and most certainly is not a modular design similar to the 4.6 and 5.4 v8's

Seeing as I've seen both torn down before, they're completely different. Perhaps some components are SIMILAR, but just do a 5.0 swap and call it a day.

As far as a head swap, I think you're thinking about a SOHC to DOHC (which you can do, but that's $).

Why were you wanting to swap? There's not enough improvement for it to be worth the time or money. If you want better power, and 5.0 explorer engine will do that and keep simar MPGs if you drive it nice.

Yes I have actually, currently my 4.0L OHV is apart and I have about $3000 worth of new engine parts sitting in the garage.

yes there is common things between the two LIKE I ALREADY STATED.. but you can not just swap blocks or heads to each other...

Just like a 302 is damn close to a 351w but it isnt the same...

if abmxboy388's engine does not say 4.0 SOHC is big stamped numbers and letters on the top of his engine, it is an OHV. or, He is Blind.
