Default just bought another ranger, need some input

i just purchased a '93 ranger 4.0L OHV 4x4 w/ approx. 250,000 miles on it. oil and filter, air filter, pcv, and clean maf is all i've done, and i have a fuel filter, just haven't put it on yet. it seems to run fine, however, there's white smoke coming from the exhaust at start up regardless of outside temp., check oil light is on and won't go off(yes i checked it!), transmission goes into drive and reverse really hard, and shifts hard to second, the 4x4 is also broke. no lights on module at start up, nothing happens when i push the button. i pushed the reset button on the module behind the driver seat, and it flashed a bunch then stopped, still no 4x4. and one of the hoses to the bi-metal sensor has been chewed off at the air cleaner housing. haven't found any other signs of rodent damage. Also, the coolant temp gauge fluctuates with the throttle, more throttle more temp. It ranges from the R to the L in normal. the oil pressure gauge seems higher than it should be, even if it's a dummy. it does move from one side of the L in normal to the other, unlike the one in my other truck thats just smack in the middle all the time.

does anyone have any suggestions/ diagnosis/ advice to offer before i start tearing into this truck?

That is a lot of miles...
Is it worth it to;
rebuild the engine, replace the tranny and transfer case, rebuild the rear end, replace the brakes, etc...?

versus the price of a new car with down payment and monthly payments...yes it is. for the cost of a down payment alone I could do alot to this truck. versus a used car with maybe less miles and reliably maintained... yes and no. Only if it's the truck i want and i have enough to pay cash up front. this truck only cost me $750. It's the truck i wanted, it just needs a good bit of attention, which i'm willing to give it. If I can find a good junkyard and do most of the work myself, I'm pretty sure I'll come out on top...

I haven't read through all of this but part of what I skimmed

4wd - check servos, they are known to die, also check wiring

White smoke - you probably have a leak of coolant somewhere, it may not be a bad idea to do head gaskets

yeah, i figured it might be the head gasket too. i put some head gasket stop leak in today. if it makes a difference i know i need gaskets, and it will buy me some time. the oil was blacker than black. theres no signs of fluids getting in other fluids. just a slight loss of coolant and white smoke. i would like nothing more than to restore it from the ground up all at once, but this truck is more for my wife right now, i just need to make sure its safe and roadworthy. and can someone clarify what the "servos" are in relation to my 4wd.

Lol the transfer case I'm assuming, since most 3rd gens on, in Rangers are controlled by a knob on the dash. You turn that, there are electric motors on your transfer case that shift the transfer case into 4wd or back to 2wd.

yup. mines got the push button module on the dash and the brainbox behind the driver seat. I'm gonna start by checking the shift motor first, then work my way back. it's my understanding that once the shift motor is removed, you can turn the spindle it sits on, and shift it manually to 4x4. you can even use the gear from the busted shift motor as a wrench. does that sound familiar to anyone?

I am not uber familiar with this, but it does sound correct.

If the sheet metal is OK, it sound like you need a wrecked donor to put your tin on.
