Default Engine rattle

Can any one tell me why I have rattle coming from the front of my motor? It's a 2002 ranger 4x4, 3 Inch body lift, 4.0 v6 with a 5 speed clutch. Does not sound like a rod or valve train. And does not get fastes with rpm's. Need help please

could be any number of things. my guess is that it's something that you loosened to put the body lift or suspension lift on. try those areas first and see what happens

If it was from the other end I would suspect that 5 speed clutch you've got.

just had the clutch replaced, tensioner pully replaced, and it still there. I cheated and bought it lifted already, and its just a body lift no suspension lift. Not a clicking sound really, more like a piece of metal rattling around some where. had it at the shop for 2 hrs and they could not find it, was thinking a bunch of ford guys like my self might be a better place to ask around. when the rpm's are high it gets louder but not faster like a rod or lifter would. its been there since i bought the truck didnt think it would be this hard to find lol. I never had a noise i could not find before. I like to think i an pretty good at workin on my trucks but this is makin be think twice, jk. any ideas would be great thanks a lot.

sounds like the timing chain tensioner issue that most early SOHC 4.0's had. within a certain RPM range the chains can rattle and make noise. does the noise go away after the truck warms up all the way? BTW, its nothing to worry much about if it is that, mines been doing it since i owned it when it had 10,000 miles on it.

the noise is always there. when i first start the truck and its cold i hear a different rattle, but that goes away within seconds. its the darndest thing this rattle! and its so hard to exlpain the way it sounds, the best way i gues would be like a baby rattle full of b.b.'s. so if anyone is missin a child come get it out from under my hood and take the rattle with ya! lol thanks everyone for your ideas, please keep them comin

It's your timing chain tensioner. Mine was doing the same exact thing for about 2 months til I brought it in to get fixed. Poor mileage, loud clanking noise, and reduced power. Depending on who you go through your looking at about $600. Its definitely worth getting replaced cuz if you snap your chain your looking at even more for the repair.

Edit: I also couldn't find out where the noise was coming from for the life of me. I had several of my friends take a look with me and none of us could find it. The truck has 3 chains on it. Front timing, rear timing, and a stabilizer shaft chain for the 4x4. The front is the only one that usually has issues on the 4.0L SOHC. Luckily that is also the easiest one to get to. Just something to think about but I'm almost 100% positive that's what your issue is.

I'm with them^ timing chain rattle is pretty common.
If you're saying its the front of the engine, then definitely suspect the chain tensioner.

sweet, good luck, man.
If you're lucky, it could just be something driven by the belt, like a water pump or alternator.

Take the belt off for a minute and you know.
