I had a 1998 Ranger 4.0L. It had the K&N. I seen no difference other than having to clean the MAF sensor after cleaning and oiling it to the stock air filter.

I did get a lot of miles on that old 98 Ranger though.

It was just a tad under 200,000 miles when the wife traded it off for a newer ride.

I stick with the stock air filter in my newer Rangers.

imho

Had a K&N filter in the CAI in my Impala. Overall, not a bad filter that never gave me any oil MAF fouling issues. What sucks is waiting a day and a half for the damn thing to dry out after cleaning it. Without a 2nd filter, or a 2nd vehicle, you're not going anywhere for a bit. I'd rather an AEM Dryflow, but they don't have a drop-in replacement for the Ranger, so I just use Fram. (Mobil-1 on the oil filtration though)

I would run a wet K&N filter before a Fram filter touched any of my Fords.

^I probably would as well. Fram air filters are a joke.

For oil filters, the K&N is actually really nice.

I run Motorcraft filters when avaialble for oil filters.

If I can get Motorcraft I go with Purolator.

But I mostly find Motorcraft available.

My current Ranger has an FL 820S on it.

Stick with the original manufacturers specified equipment you cant go wrong. People wonder why they have so many problems with a vehicle...ITS BECAUSE YOU CANT KEEP YOUR DAMN HANDS OFF IT!!!

Paper filters are fine and won't net you any HP or fuel economy increase. I know guys running 500hp setups in there Firebirds and still use paper air filters.
