Exclamation need help 01 ranger 4.0 8-9 mpg

i apologize if this has been covered already did a search and didn't find anything even close to my problem. I have an 01 ranger edge 4x4 4.0 4 speed auto I'm getting 8-9 mpg I filled up tank set my trip meter and refilled on empty to get this no check engine light and no codes I checked 4 times with 4 different odb2 scanners (matco, snapon, autozone special, and a Cornell tools). good spark from coil pack and plugs just did a full tune up oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter and plugs and wires runs good plenty of power and clean maf sensor. But I can't figure this out any ideas? Oh stock height 245/75/r15 and a cherry bomb muffler are the only addons. I just bought thus truck a month ago it has 148k on it maybe an o2 sensor that's not registering, or could it be a power programmer someone before me used and didnt put it back to stock?

If it was an O2 sensor, it would throw a code. i was thinking of a clogged cat, which will drastically reduce your MPG, however it will also reduce engine power and some times throw a code if there is a 02 sensor after the cat (not sure on the Rangers if there is an aftercat o2 sensor). The engine is running rich, but for what reason? Some times the computer will purposely make the engine run rich if it detected any problems, so that it can keep the vehicle power up to keep it moving. Its an open loop fail safe mode that some times needs to be reset, even if the CEL light is off. Did you have the scanners scan for stored codes and not just for codes being thrown at this time? You could also try disconnecting your battery for a while as that will usually reset the PCM.

New cats last year did 2. My expo had cats go out and it went into failsafe mode no more than 5mph. As for scanning no codes came up none stored and no check engine light. What will resting pcm do for it?engine doesnt smell very rich no gas spewing out of pipe. What about a power programmer that some one could have installed and not reset? Would that reset on the pcm reset too?

Its possibly that someone reprogrammed the PCM with a tuner. I believe you can get the PCM flashed which will restore the factory settings. If you have any dyno or performance shops nearby, it might be worth calling them up and asking about it.

Haha yea I went that route already ford said they will do it its 105$ for diagnostic and then $2-300 for Reflashing ecm. Ac delco said they'd do it but its $100 and neither of them are guaranteed and of course non refundable. At that rate I can just go get it optimized/tuned for what I want or just buy a new ecm all together. So i figure I will go get my friends programmer have him restore back to factory and see if it locks in to my vin I as reading if it doesn't lock in there is already a program that has been ran on there so I will have to get it flashed somewhere lol well I've noticed a little increase in mpg since the tune up so I'm trying techron fuel system cleaner ill see if that works the truck sat for a couple of months until I bought it so maybe it just needs some time to clean itself out. I'm also getting a bad miss now and the engine cranks and cranks and cranks before it fires. It's always done the starting thing since I got it but it just got a little worse since I did the tune up it cranks for about 10 seconds before it runs any thoughts on that one?

Yoru fuel injectors could have some buildup on them which will cause the hard start, misfire and might even affect your fuel economy if your PCM is trying to compensate for reduced fuel in a cylinder. I would also check on the engine timing; I'm not 100% sure but I think bad timing can also cause poor fuel economy.

Timing would cause performance issues tho wouldnt it? I'm not having any lack of power just terrible fuel economy, misfire and starting issues

i get 13 mpg mixed driving. If your PCM has been reprogrammed i'm going to tell you what the Mechanic told me at the Ford dealership. Without the tuner that programmed the PCM it can't be set back to factory. The tuner retains the factory settings. For the dealer to put a new one in it's like 800-1000. A new PCM may or may not fix your problem.

No affiliation but I have used justanswer.com a couple of times. Plugged in your problem w/o much detail. Mechanic with lots of years with Ford plus lots more years wanted $18 for an answer. At the rate you are spending money it might be worth a try. You've certainly done a good job eliminating the normal stuff and have provided plenty of info. There's so much special crap on engines any more the ole plugs, points, condenser and carb kit just don't cut it any more. On a different forum a chevy was drinking gas with no codes because of fuel pressure regulator. You really need specialized info these days.

With justanswer you have to M/C or paypal in the money, if you aren't satisfied with the answer you get you say so and the money stays in your account there until you get an answer you like. It ain't perfect but your answer guy is really motivated to provide a good answer so he'll get paid.

My last tankful in my '04 4.0 4X4 with 86,000 got 15.0 with mostly town driving.

Good luck.
