tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
What should I get? Looking to do a little something else to my truck. Would be nice to hear from both sides.

Tuner! also, custom tunes are the way to go. get an X-cal and have custom tunes made for it. check out http://rogueperformance.com/RogueCustomTuning.html fred is a fellow ranger lover (and a member here) and is a hell of a tuner, he'll hook you up.

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
Tune most definately. I would only run a UD kit on a performance car. With your stereo mods you would probably have trouble keeping the battery charged, especially at idle. It isn't uncommon to have a stock car run into problems with a UD kit including dimming headlights, power equipment not working right and stereo equipment.

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
I still would never do a UD kit on one of my cars. These kits usually just mean they come with a harmonic balancer and possibly a OD alternator pulley; thats it, and niether of which will really help you on the power issue (an OD alternator pulley pretty much cancels any gain given by the UD crank pulley).

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
Superchips Cortex - Reads & clears codes, has a performance & gas saver mode, change shift points, calibrate you speedometer for bigger tires and differential, and you can update the tuner online.
I could definately tell the difference it made.

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
That UD kit is a waste. $400 for almost 0 hp gain. Having a UD crank pulley and an OD alternator pulley is contradictory; the gains will be minimal. Save the $400 and get something that will actually benefit you like headers and a tune.
Actually, don't get a tune just yet. Get headers first and then a tune. You are supposed to get a tune once you have finished all of your performance upgrades to get the maximum benefit. Getting a tune now and adding headers later will be a bit of waste as the tune will no longer be all that great.
Get headers now and a tune when you can; best route you can go right now.

thats why custom tunes are awesome. if you change anything on the truck you can just get new tunes made and emailed to you.

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
Never had any problem with my stereo or charging system after my UD crank and alternator pulley we're installed.

True, I was thinking more along the lines of a dyno tune, but for the Ranger a mail ordered one would be fine.
As for the UD pulley, I am going on past experiences; still, I wouldn't pay $400 for a kit that may net you 2-3 hp.

Re: tuner or underdrive pulley kit?
I forgot to mention if your gonna go with a tuner. I recommend the SCT Livewire.
