I have a 2005 4WD 4 liter SOHC Ford Ranger. So I noticed that it started getting difficult to shift into gears and that I was losing hydraulic pressure on my clutch. I assumed that my clutch was not disengaging completely. I checked the master cylinder for my clutch fluid and it was almost full. I topped it off with with Dot 3 and then jacked up the truck and cracked the bleeder valve. I was waiting for a stream of fluid to check to see if there was any air in the line but nothing came out.

I got my buddy and we worked the clutch pedal back and forth alternating opening and closing the bleeder valve to try and push the air out. Well some stuff came out and it wasn't clear dot 3, it was completely black and there was white chunks of what looked like a seal or o-ring piece. Only about two ounces of fluid came out.

I don't know if there is a internal seal or not or how that white junk got in there. Is there a seal for the slave cylinder? I imagine that I am going to have to drop my transmission and replace my clutch and flywheel but I don't how to deal with a shot slave cylinder. Any suggestions of what my problem could be and how I could fix it?

Ok so I have been trying to bleed this clutch for like 2 days now. Tried every trick that i know. I even took the master cylinder reservoir of the wall and tilted it at an angle to removed the trapped air but that didn't do much either. Any suggestions??? No fluid comes out of the bleeder valve, only got a little contaminate black fluid and some white junk out the first time I opened it. I have tried jacking up the front of the truck. I have tried everything ....

sounds like a slave cylinder it happeded to me. if i'm right its inside your bell housing.

if ur doing a clutch replacement now is the time to do it. its 2 or three bolts hold it in and then it pops out.

i bought mine fro advancced since theres was billet alluminum and had a dust cover over most of it.


u say ur not losing fluid so it sounds like something broke off and now is stuck in the tubes.

still u need a new slave cylinder

i highly reccomend replacing the clutch with the whole kit and also resufacing you flywheel.

I already have the clutch kit and bought a brand new fly wheel to replace instead of getting it machined.

I use to be a mechanic in the Air Force and worked on ground equipment, diesel engine generators etc, so I am mechnicaly inclined, I just don't have good knowledge on trucks. I have replaced a head gasket, changed brakes and that sort of thing before but never dropped a transmission. I don't know if I am getting in over my head or not.

When I drop my tranmission will I have easy acces to the slave cylinder? Also do you think I woud need to replace it? Would it be easier to figure out why my clutch won't bleed when I drop the transmission? Sorry little dumb when it comes to dropping trannies.
