Just purchased a 98 (manu 6/98) XL/4.0 EFI.
I wanted to research what I should expect with this engine but, there is very little mention of this engine in the Ranger before 2000 on the internet.
My under the hood labels indicate the 4.0. No mention of OHV or SOHV. So I'm to assume it is the original configuration.

Was this a special order option untill 2000?
Is there a reason NADA, KBB and Edmunds doesn't list the 4.0 in the year 98?

Just wanted know what I've gotten into.

I believe they've had the 4.0 since 1990....1990-1997 (some 97s were SOHC) were all OHV (over head valve) and from then on, they've all been SOHC 4.0L

the SOHC's didnt come out in the rangers untill 2001 (explorers got them around 97 or 98) so yours would be an OHV. Brinker is right, the 4.0 has been out since around 1990 and they are all fuel injected.

thanx Brad. Ive been on that page (rangerstation), and I see that it was 1990, not 2000.
Still curious as to why there so little info on the 98 and the 4.0.

I believe the output of the OHV 4L was 170HP at 5250RPM and 225 Lb ft of torque at 3000 RPM, but thats just an estimate, I am sure there is someone that has more info on the OHV, I have seen it somewhere on here.

4.0 OHV:
HP 160 @ 4200 RPM
TQ 220 @ 2400 RPM

4.0 SOHC:
HP 207 @ 5250 RPM
TQ 238 @ 3000 RPM

I have a ranger that was built in december of 99 and it has a factory sohc.. any ideas why? im not complaining by any means just wondering.
