Default Saturated air filter and air box...PCV bad?

Well, I just got my 98 (6/98) Ranger w/ 4.0 and have found an issue. I'm not versed on auto mechanics hence the reason for joining your group. 135000 miles and there was no oil on the dip. Added 2 qts and now registers proper level.

Pulled the air box lid and found an oily mess. The filter is extremely oily and the bottom of the box has oil in it. What I recall is this may be a bad PCV valve. Then again this is why I'm here with you all today.

What else could it be and where / what do I do next?
I'll assume that the vacuum hose needs to be checked for strong vacuum, if this is good then just a new valve?
Where is the PCV valve?

Thanx in advance.

I would tend to agree on the PCV. It sounds like it is stuck open.

That's what I figured. As long as it isn't blowby/rings. I guess I'll pull the hose tomorrow and check for suction. Replace the PCV (where is again?) and clean the box and replace the air filter.

Thx

Check on the valve cover(driver side) or intake manifold (upper). Follow the hose and you'll find it

Some of the older engine designs (like mine) have a oval shaped canister on the driver's side of the engine block down near the oil pan. The PCV is plugged into there.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then you might have a blow-by issue but look at the cheap easy fixes first.

Dude, hate to say it but you're wrong....PCV is on the valve cover driver side on our engines

Wasn't saying I was right. I was just commenting on where mine is as a possible place to look.

Drove all day yesterday and now CK ENG light came on.....damn it. Still havn't done the PCV yet. But, oil level did maintain it's level.
Other than diag hook up, any ideas as to CK ENG light possibilities (135.685 miles)?
Have no idea if Timing belt has been changed. Engine idles great and seems tight.
Concerned why light would just pop on after driving 20 miles....shame I have a 90 foot warranty on the sale. Can't return it now.

The 2.3L Duratec, 3.0L and 4.0L engines all use timing chains. That much oil in your air filter may have frigged-up the MAF. Pull the codes before going any further.

You open the airbox cover, remove the old filter, put the new one in, and close the cover.
