Default Fan belt keeps coming off!! HELP!!

Hello everyone. Brand new meat here. I have a 98 Ranger 2 wd with a 3 liter. Every time it rains or is slushy out, my fan belt comes off. Its driving me nuts. The only thing I see is that there is a bit (3/16) front to rear play in my power steering pump pulley. I ts spring and pretty hard to NOT drive in the rain/slush. Also putting it back on twice a dday is getting old fast. Is this a common problem with this vehicle?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Not a common problem at all. It's probably time for a new belt.

Thanks guys. I have been looking hard at it and I truly believe that the Power Steering pump may be the culprit. The pulley moves front to back quite a bit. If it only takes a millimeter or 2 to jump a belt, then thats it because this one moves 3/16 to 1/4 inch. As a side note. It really seems to happen while turning. All of the other pulleys are very tight and in line. I will change the belt with a gator, but I await a few more responses before I change the pump out. And by the way this truck is a 3 liter, not a 4.

Thanks again

Mike

yeah if the pump pulley is moving that far out of alignment that could very well be the cause of the belt jumping

So far so good guys. I appreciate all the help. I changed the belt and not only did the chirp go away, I ran it pretty hard through some puddles while turning and it didnt jump. I was going to change the PS pump, but when I got to the parts store, all of the new pumps had just as much end play in the shafts. The tensioner was very strong and the idler pulley was smooth and straight. Hard to believe that something as simple as a worn belt could have been the problem. Thats just not usually my luck. Just an FYI. The old belt grooves were quite deep. The new belts grooves were very faint. Perhaps that is the wear sign???

Thanks again

Mike

Well that lasted all of about 20 hours. The new belt is shredded and popped off again. I have no idea what to do. Any other ideas????

Ok, something on there is loose or sticking for that to happen. Check ALL the pulleys for spin and play.

I checked em all by trying to move them HARD and with a straight edge and the only one that has any slop is the PS pump . They are all straight and tight. I will check the one on the end of the crank, but it will take 2 of us. 1 to crank the engine and 1 to watch. The new belt actually tore a strip off the leading edge if that helps at all.

ok more info. There is power steering fluid on the underside of the hood, on the fender well, and on the top of the filler cap at the pump. Could this be from driving the truck home 1 mile without the belt on? or is this the likely culprit? Video coming in a minute.

just because you've seen a new uninstalled pump that has a loose pulley doesn't mean it's supposed to be that way after installation. I mean there there is a special tool used during installation to lock the pulley into place. But it didn't wobble. That's what I thought you meant. Could it be a leak that is causing your belt to be lubed? Any previous signs of that?

EDIT: just saw the video. idler pulley looks dry. It should rotate but not freewheel spin. Didn't look too far gone though.

Thats not what I mean. It wasn't a loose PULLEY on the new pumps. There was END PLAY on the SHAFT of the new pumps with no pulley installed. I dont think it was as much as the existing pump however.
