Default compressor cycles a lot

I have a 02 ranger xlt and i've noticed whenever im idling and have the heat or a/c on the compressor makes some sort of noise and it lowers the rpms down below 500. I know some noise is normal but mine does it almost every five seconds. Could the IAC cause this?

I think anything but the vent location activates the pump to keep it lubed. If it is low on freon it will cycle like that.

Off, Vent only, and floor only are the only settings that do not run the AC compressor. So its normal for the compressor to cycle if you have it any other settings. However, the RPM's should not be dropping like that. This is very common symptom of a bamboozled IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). You can very easily unbolt it and clean it out. This usually fixes it.
