Default '01 EDGE Clutch Bleeding Issues

I have a '01 Ranger Edge 4.0 and I am having some issues regarding the clutch. I am trying to figure out weather or not I am having a slave cylinder or master cylinder problem. Just a few hours ago I was bleeding the system due to the fact that i couldn't put the truck in gear nor had any type of pressure on the pedal. while bleeding about 64oz. of DOT 3 through the system we were still having air bubbles come out of the bleeder on the slave. However the pedal did come back a little bit but it can still be hard to get into gear with the motor running. I have another friend of the family mechanic saying that it is the master cylinder gone bad but I am out here looking for more options before i have to break down and replace the entire clutch system, basically i'm looking for the cheaper route. If anyone has any tips or suggestions that would help me get this ranger back on the road please let me know, Thanks!
