Cracked Engine
I have a 1994 Ranger 4x4 with a crack in the engine. The crack is about an inch below the exhaust manifold.
I have tried all kinds of puddy remedies from local hardware stores the "STATE" there good for cracked engines. they last for a few hundred KM's ( yes Im in canada....lol) then they vibrate off.
Anyone have any ideas on a way to fix the problem? or should i replace the engine? if so, anyone have one for sale or no where to get one?

Re: Cracked Engine
is it the head that is cracked or the engine itself?

Re: Cracked Engine
well worse case scenario is that the water in the water jacket around your pistons freezes and expands past what the metal is capable of and makes a crack kind of like how pot holes are made

Re: Cracked Engine
back when engines were cast iron, we used to weld them back together. i know that some people can weld aluminum. would it be possible to weld it back together?
come to think of it, i have seen some aluminum racecar blocks welded back together after they throw a rod.

Re: Cracked Engine
Thanx guys,
It was cracked when I bought it so I do not know how it did, but the explanation from more cowbell makes good sense. The crack is so close to the exhaust manifold that when i bought it from the road side dealer he said right off the bat, it has a cracked exhaust manifold. I started it and agreed. Took a look and agreed.
seems the average price for an engine is about $1000. Then install, but i did find a guy that said he'd give the weld a shot. IT's a 94 so is it aluminum or cast iron?

Re: Cracked Engine
If its right by the exhaust manifold it might just be a cracked head which would be cheaper then a whole new engine.. and it should be an iron block and heads

Re: Cracked Engine
take a magnet and see if it sticks to the engine (not the exhaust manifold). if it sticks then its cast iron. if not then its aluminum

That's an old trick many don't think of. It work on checking the quality of a stainless steel grill too. If it's a good quality grill, the magnet shouldn't stick.

yep. some stainless is partially magnetic, but it will also rust in time. good stainless wont stick to a magnet at all, and i have never seen it rust at all
