Default Re: Oil Question (4.0L Gods Please Respond)

ok guys i just crawled under and drained about a qt, actually dead on a quart (sheer luck haha)

just to clarify with the dipstick, cause i am a dipstick hahaha:

on the stick it looks like Oxxxxx|---O

before the oil was drained the oil was past the max O, right now its dead even with the end of the textured pattern towards the max O.

am i dead on? or do i need a lil more oil?

I have an 07 Ranger 4.0. It says in the owners manual to only use 5 qts. That puts the oil level about half way in the cross hatch pattern on the dip stick. The owners manual says not to use more than 5 qts.

After making engines for over a hundred years, don't you suppose that they design them with a little tolerance for over/ under fill rather than expecting owners to use an eyedropper to get it just right?

Reason's for disagreement between oil added and dipstick reading include unlevel ground, dipstick tube not seated and wrong dipstick.

5 quarts. No more, no less even with a prefilling the filter....... unless it burns a shit ton of oil. My biggest problem is that I run a 100% synthetic oil, so when I fill it, I CANT SEE IT ON THE STICK! And who the hell at ford decided to run a dark as hell dipstick anyways?!

My 4.0 SOHC motor takes 5 qts. No more no less. But did you use a different brand/size filter? That would seem to be the only way it should take more ? Also did you drain the oil when the motor was warm? If not then maybe not every bit of oil drained out ?

Mine is always 5qts even no more no less, a little over the top hash will not hurt, it would take a fair amount over to hurt/damage/lock up the engine i did once by accident cause i added oil stabilizer and didnt think to compensate the oil that much. And as far as changing your oil every 3k is a bit much, i promise your just wasting your money but if it makes you feel better do it cause i did for a long time if your still using conventional oil yeah change it every 3k but semi-synthetic 5k and if your using a premium full synthetic you can do 7k no worries, exception to this would be the time vs. mileage. ( just my two cents)

Working for a Lubrication Facility, I have never had to add more than 5 quarts to a 4.0 liter in a ranger... ever.
I can't say yet on mine, as I haven't done mine yet since the dealer gave me one for free
