Default 92 Ranger XLT 4.0 4x4 - oil in intake - help!

Ok, I bought this baby 4 months ago. It was in bad shape, and I'm in the process of making it my hunting truck. I've replaced the radiator, brakes, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gasket, cut the cat and put on a glasspack w/cherybomb exhaust, K&N air filter, TA/KO tires etc.. all kinds of stuff.

Here is my current problem I can't seem to solve. I took my intake off to clean it out, it has oil in it! I know this isn't right. My '97 ranger 4 banger has the same vacum hose running from the valve cover into the intake, and it doesn't do this. I'm stumped as to what is causing it. The entire inside of the intake is just nasty with oil and gunk, so is the passenger-side valve cover internals. The passenger side where the oil is added runs a good bit hotter than the opposite side (this is the coolant exit side). From what I understand reading here, the valve "clack" is normal in the 4.0.

I have to add a quart of oil to it every 400 miles or so, (10w30) but I believe it is because it is leaking out of the oil pan gasket, which is another issue all together, or maybe they are linked? This '92 has 187k miles, and sat up for 2 years with the previous owner. I'm not leaking coolant, so I don't believe it is the head gasket. The temp gauge stays near the bottom on the highway unless I take it offroad in 4-low, then it goes 3/4 the way up.

My 97 ranger is a 2.3L 4cyld 2wd w/167k miles, and it doesn't have any problems like this. Temp stays at 1/3rd on it.

EDIT: I forgot to add, on this 92, the oil pressure gauge says it is slightly above the middle, which seems normal. Also, it doesn't seem to have any power before 2k RPM. Don't know if thats normal or not for this engine. Doesn't seem like it.

check to see if the plenum has a leak it could cause oil in the upper parts of the intake i would just do a whole gasket kit for your intake (its like 30 bucks for my 2.9l a set) some new valve cover gaskets and a new oil pan one i know leaking from the valve cover is sort of common because they used cork gaskets from the factory and they kind of petrify over time

John,
I just bought a 92 Ranger STX 4x4 4.0L. trying to figure out how the previous owners reengineered everything. Could you post a bunch of pics of the engine, wireing harness and how they connect.

You might want to take a look at your PCV valve. It could be sticking an allowing too much oil vapor into the intake. If that doesn't fix the problem, you might have a ring problem causing too much pressure in the crank case.
