Exclamation 94 4.0 just quit and wont restart

Started truck after work to warm up (around 10 degrees) jumped back into it 5 min later, put in reverse and it died. Treid to restart, it would crank but wouldn't start, it just barlly sputered, then started to knock, then sputered, then sounded like it lost compression on a couple of cylinders (knock went away). Know the starter spins but seems to be just touching ring gear and not total engaging. If the timing belt or chain breaks, does the pistons hit the valves?

Sounds almost like your starter gear got seized up on the flexplate/flywheel. If I were you I would first look for any leaks and then pull the starter. See if anything looks out of the ordinary. Another thing, can you rotate the engine by hand? (meaning put a breaker bar or something on the dampner and see if you can rotate it.)

I'm no mechanic, but from personal experience my first guess would be a burned out coil. sounds like what happened with my 4 cyl. last year. I'm in the 6 cyl. forum cuz I'm hoping to buy one in the coming weeks. Anyway.. I used to drive a '97 6cyl. for work on a farm that leaked transmission fluid baaaaad! You new it was time to put more atf in when it would act up similar to yours, but only when in gear. That's my two cents til someone more knowledgeable can answer you.

I guarantee the starter and flex plate theory is the ticket. Had the same problem on my 92.

i have kinda the same problem i have a 97 ranger 4.0 4x4 and i just got done putting new intake and head gasket in it and i was doing my usual test drive after drove it about 15 miles then it seemed like it has a power loss ( Not 100% Sure) then it just died pulled over to restart the engine just cranks act like there no compression and free spins the engine... I took the timing cover off thinking it jumped time but no such lucky everything is good so my next step i pulled valve cover and checked for rockers off the vavles and they checked out fine im stumpped and my dad a certified machanic and he has no idea so and help is much need asap thanks

Do you have spark and fuel pressure? That would have been the first step instead of pulling the timing chain cover

Check to see if the transmission adjuster isnt off. What I mean is, if the transmission shifter linkage is pushed into the reverse position, the vehicle wont start. You can adjust them pretty easily. Just get a Haynes manual and it will walk you through it step by step

Starter took a sh**. The little snap ring that keeps the starter gear from going out to far dissapeared. The gear would go out against the starter cone and bind up. Put new snap ring on but would not start. It would crank over but just sputtered. Disconnected the battery to reset the computer, been running good since. Still have the check engine light coming on after about 5 min of driving and is a little slugish exept at full throttle. My code reader won't read anything.
