I agree with Diablo...remove the silencer and replace that with astainless steel tube or PVC pipe will work as long as its the right diameter... PVC is paintable...thats what I did (definately better sound) and get a K&N drop-in filter...my 197 Ford Ranger had a fluted tube connected to the air box that went into the fender well...I removed that and configured my own cold air intake tube out of a 90 degree plumbing tube and 2 inch PVC pipe to the front of the engine bay so it would be in front of the engine and just behind the bumper...works great

Hey if anybody is still reading this thread... do you guys have any opinions/experience with cone filters? Just removing the air box and putting one on? If so, any brand suggestions?

NOOOOOO!!!!! Don't do that. Sucking in hot air from under the hood will make a great drop in performance. Leave the airbox as it is. A stock paper filter or K&N filter in place of it meets and exceeds the needs of your engine.

hmm. not trying to argue (this is why i asked in the first place), but i know a couple of people who have them and like them, and don't cai's have the filter in the same spot? pictures ive seen of K&N and AEM (like the one posted above) have their filter in the same position as a cone filter on the rest of the stock intake.

Yea, which is one of the reasons most CAI's are also useless power-robbing junk on a ranger. Go tell a couple people you know to prove their hot air sucking piece of junk actually does anything productive in their vehicles.

The stock intake can flow more than the stock engine will ever need without restriction. Including the stock airbox and air filter.

ok, not to doubt anyone, just finished the "famous" air box mod, really not seeing how this lil change will help, but doesn't cost me a thing to try it, i'll give it a month, if i don't notice anything, i'll prob be building eithere a short ram or a C.A.I. w/ Spectre intake kit, i'm mainly doing it for MPG, HP n sound though nice ain't important to me
