Question Performance and Mpg?

I just got some money and I'm thinking of buying something to help improve with my MPG and gain some HP. after getting my 33's put on. Should I buy a SCT X3 tuner with custom tunes of save up my money for new gears like some 4.56?

i say gears, it will put less stress on your tranny and other goodies, thus lengthening the life of your motor and tranny and transfer case, and giving you more money to spend on gas! so in a way its saving for gas instead of gas saving.

Just contacted a place that will tune it for me but couldn't get me a price right now. Hope to get it next week and hope it's not that much

Do gears first and then a tuner. Although tuners are great they will never correct the drivetrain strain placed on your truck from bigger tires. My 4.56 gears provided more performance gains than my x cal did as well as helped the drivetrain not have to work as hard. My vote is to do both but if you have to pick just one do the gears

Please excuse my ignorance on this, I am new to Ranger ownership and my 2005 XLT 4.0L SOHC is getting <10mpg!! Would the "gears" switch make this better or am I an ignorant newbie who needs to go find another pathway to overcome this aspect of Ranger ownership that scares the life out of me!? BTW I have no idea what the "gears" change actually entails, so any additional information would be greatly appreciated, as would suggestions on how to get just a little better fuel economy. TKS.

Yes Getting different gears can help with increasing mpg and helping reducing the strain on your drive train. And switching out old gears and putting new in is something that you can do by your self IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING AND HAVE THE CORRECT TOOLS but the best is to have a shop do it for you.

thats not always the case about the mileage, it all depends on what gear set is in it stock, what size tires youre running ect. my 4.56 gears helped my mileage big time.
