Default How to get a stuck oil filter off?

I was wondering how do I get a stuck oil filter off, because the previous owner I bought my 1994 Ford Ranger tightened the oil filter on to tight, I couldn't even get it off with a filter wrench! I tried the strap type of wrench and that didn't even work. I bought the wrench that goes on the end of a socket, but I don't know if that will make it budge if the strap wrench didn't make it budge. So I just left the old oil filter in and put new oil in. I'm thinking about taking it to get my oil changed by a mechanic just this one time, so they can deal with the stuck filter. If not how can I loosen and take off the stuck filter?

Yeah that would be an idea, do you know how many miles I should put the new filter on since I have the old one on still? I filled it with new oil already, but since the oil filter is the old one I don't want to risk having the engine get damaged because I doubt the filter would last another 3,000 miles.

just pop it off man, use an oil filt wrench or a strap, and try to get the new one on quick and replace whatever oil you lost

Agreed. I had to do this on the F100. Be sure to put a drain pan under the oil filter to catch the qt or so that may come out. You shouldn't have to worry about your new oil as if you've let the truck sit for a bit most of it should be back down in the oil pan.

Just a FWIW anytime you change oil and filter. After you get the filter off, take a rag and wipe off the filter sealing area on the engine,it get any crud that may have gathered on the top side, but more importantly you are making sure the filter O-ring came off with the old filter and did not stick to the engine. Two o-rings WILL cause the old one to blow out at the wrong time with possible-probable engine damage.

if the filter socket fits, that will work. just use an extension that'll drop the ratchet down far enough for a good grip. hell throw a wobble adapter up near the filter if you need to.
Other wise, use a big screwdriver like everyone is saying. You might shear the hell out of the case at first, but it's gonna come off.

Can also try a large set of Channel locks. That's what I use on Ford's front wheel drive setups where it's impossible to reach.

Channel lock and Crafstmen both sell a filter wrench that looks like a crazy set of pliers and the grip very well.

First thing I grab when taking an old filter off is the socket wrench style. It is the easiest. If that fails, then I grab for this:

Cowboykilroy is so right. Had exactly that happen years ago in an x-gf's car - was not a good day.

Back to the oil filter, chances are you've already got this fixed, but if anyone has trouble with the hammer screwdriver method I know this works really well. My buddy has all sorts of toys and is a mechanic by trade - luckily he shares. He used this little gadget on another buddy's stuck filter and it came right off. It was simple, and he said it fits everything from his airplane to all the cars he works on. I found the company's video so I thought I'd share http://youtu.be/k2nDh93-Yog

that video was cool, but ive been in tight places that i couldnt get a drill in, let alone a hole saw, maybe a right angle drill, but then, hard to use in tight quarters..
