Definately, You can toy with all kinds of stuff depending on how moto savvy you are.
You can get generic aluminum pieces off of ebay with silly connectors and do the connect-a-pipe setup, with a filter adapter avail at SummitRacing. Or you can do like the idgit friends of mine do and make it out of exhaust pipe. . . (they are junk draggers, one has a astrovan that runs low 10's, they use the exhaust tubing to make turbo plumbing)

There is so much that can be done to make a cold air system it is unbelievable.
I assume your battery is on the passenger side, the intake is almost straight out the front, your charcoal canister is low on the driver side, and you have a pretty good distance between the radiator and the coolant/windshield washer bottle on the drivers side.
This has proven to be a pretty good place to locate a cold air system on vehicles setup with 4.0's and the battery on right. It puts the filter in front of the engine away from it's heat and close to the radiator support so you have a place to secure the filter. Look at a 98 and newer Ranger with a 4.0, and visualize that type of setup on the other side without the box. If you don't have access to one, we will post some pictures of what most of us have paid a pretty good chunk of change for, these can be fabbed up and installed for cheap if you have an idea of what you want and are willing to do some looking.
You can get an assortment of parts from various sources to locate one there, or go to the auto salvage yard and find an inlet hose that has the bends in about the right angles and will accept your MAF. A 95 Ranger 2x4 with a 2.3 took a cone filter in a small container attached to the right side with a bolt on bracket, (others may have taken the same thing) with a little designing you can mount it on the opposite side, extend you MAF wiring, and open up the back of the box and plumb a 4 inch hose into the back from where ever you can access cold air.
Looks being important to most of us, (not me so much) you may want to buy a system for another year with a 4.0 engine and just reverse it to the other side and figure out what hoses you need to run where.
The lines going to your air box are vacuum hoses, connect them together or plug them off, don't leave them open, they will suck sh*t into your engine and create more problems.

I am not expert on a 4.0L, but definitely fimilarize yourself with those vacuum lines as to what they do. It will take some time and research, but it helps later if you need to diagnose some types of emissions problems. Some of them you may want to retain.

a cold air intake on these motors doesnt do a thing. your stock air box and filter will out flow what the motor pulls in. the best up grade is just a k&n drop in filter

Re: cold air intake even possible?
my engine don't want to work to pull in air, believe me the intake tubing is too small for the air the engine is taking in. put in a pvc pipe down through the bottom of the air box and fender-well using pvc pipe, no it don't suck in water unless you are of course in 3 feet of water, but then you can use the pvc pipe to make a snorkel also.
