i believe that the balance shaft is needed because it is a v6. a v8 is naturally balanced with the "throws" of the crank (where the rods bolt onto) being 90 degrees apart, or 4 throws total in one circle. a v6 has to have 3 throws at 120 degrees apart. making the firing order all messed up which causes vibrations.
the balance shaft counteracts the vibrations and eliminates them. why it is only in 4x4s doesnt make sense to me.
now that i think about it, my engine (which is the ohv) vibrates pretty noticeable right at 2750 rpms. i think that it is the harmonics making it do that and the fact that its a v6...
i might be wrong about all this. if i am please correct me
