Poor gas mileage
we have a 2010 6 cyl Ranger that was getting pretty decent gas mileage until lately. My husband took it down to San Jose from Redding and when he got back I tallied up the gas receipts and his average mileage was 16 mpg. We have taken it down there before in the summer and it averaged 20 with the A/C going. Is it time to visit my local dealer and complain or is this normal? It doesn't have a lot of miles on it 4,688 to be exact. The oil has been changed only once due to the fact that we don't use it a lot (we both have scooters and use them more going around town).
Any help with this would be appreciated.

Re: Poor gas mileage
There are many variables that can come in to play: different driving conditions -higher speed, more traffic, more city, etc; winter gas is usually less efficient than summer; colder outside temperatures; using 10% ethanol gas... all these = lower gas mileage. mpg will likely become more consistent as the miles add up, but 20 is pretty good for a 4 liter, regardless.

Re: Poor gas mileage
Start simple, check your tire pressure. That isn't too much of a drop in mileage. Maybe he was a bit heavy on the pedal. I only get 17mpg in my truck, but that's all city driving and I like to have fun in the snow.

Re: Poor gas mileage
That trip was pure highway mileage. When he's gone before he got between 19 and 20. I just can't figure why the drop. We also have a strange thing going on with the temperature controls. When you use the controls on the right in the summer, it turns on the A/C compressor but the outside air icon on the left is just outside air with no A/C. Is this normal???? Could it be that when he was running the defroster on the right it was turning on the compressor and using more gas???

Yes Ma'am, it's so the lubricants in the a/c system get circulated.. I'm sure that will have an effect on gas mileage.. in my '99 I run vent as much as possible, it is one setting a/c compressor is not engaged

Re: Poor gas mileage
I have a 2010 XLT supercab. I get 19.5 to 23.5 MPG with or with out ac/heat. with city/high way driving combined I'm getting around 21 MPG. closer to 19.5 during mostly city and closer to the 23.5 with mostly high way. I use the Ultra Gauge info, no math calculations needed.

Re: Poor gas mileage
It sounds like you have exactly what we have and the mileage use to be like that but has gone down dramatically. We will have to keep checking the tires and make sure the compressor part of the heating system is not being used and then maybe it will go back to where it was. It is sure a disappointment that it gets worse than our big Chrysler Aspen.

No method of calculating fuel burn is precise enough for a 0.5mpg drop to be even up for discussion.
