4.0 Motor Swap
I have a 1995 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 in it. My EGR is bad and it needs replaced. While looking for parts I found a 2002 4.0 motor. Can I swap my motor directly for this new one? The new motor has 60k on it and the guy wants 100 bucks for it. This is my first post so please be gentle.

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
Wasnt 1996 The first year for OBDII? correct me if im wrong but you might run into a few problems with that unless you get everything including harness(including the one under the dash) , ECU, O2 sensors in the right place, etc. Other than that yea, it should swap over

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
it's not going to be a direct swap. you are going to need wiring harness and computer. not to mention the engine will not run without the steering column and coded key. one option you could try is finding a harness from a 97 explorer with the sohc 4.0. they didn't have the pats coded key on them. that would be the closest to a plug and play you could get. i've thought hard about doing this to my 95. i've come to the conclusion it's just not worth it.

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
Damn! Well Thanks for the input. For only $100 I thought it would be worth it. Thanks again!

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
if you use all the sensors from the 95 motor on the new motor you shouldn't have any issues

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
what about bell housing bolts...? it seems when I was swapping over my auto to manual I read something about the m5r1 and an HD version and something about bolt patterns being different. Anyone key in on this...?

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
Are you talking about swapping your 4.0 OHV for a 4.0 SOHC or OHV to OHV??

Re: 4.0 Motor Swap
it can be done, like they posted you'll need to do some wiring to get it all working. you'll also need to the sohc exhaust on there. the tranny will bolt up, you'll just not use the one bolt that doesn't align
