Default Timing chains sohc_dohc ???

Hi

One of the weakest links in the 4.0lt V6 SOHC & DOHC engine has to be the rapid wearing flimsy camshaft timing chains

Does anyone know of someone that manufactures better more robust timing chain sets than what the original 4.0lt V6 SOHC & DOHC come out with ? say like a twin roller timing chain and sprocket setup with appropriate chain guides and tensions.

When one looks at the original timing chain and sprocket set I would have to say my mountain bike has a stronger chain on it !!!

cheers

Try asking wvcat, I believe he is working on a 4.0 as we speak. He may have your answer

I don't know of a better replacement set up. I am actually pretty new to working on sohc's. This is my 2nd one and I am putting the heads back on tonight. I didn't replace the timing components, mine are still good.

The aspect of three timing chains scares me, especially having one on the back.

I really appreciate my truck having the 3.0 and still being OHV.

Check the classified ads and you'll see loads of 4.0 ohc with 175k or more miles. Not my definition of flimsy. On many engines you would have had a couple of $500 timing belt replacements by then. Three chains, so what? Small as a bicycle chain? Does the job.

the problem isnt with the timing chains themselves.. it resides in the guides for the timing chains, primarily the one or two on the front end of the engine. the guides break off over time and cause the chain to rattle a little bit. This has no ill effect on the engine, just makes an annoying sound on a cold start and in the higher rpm's.
