Default Temp gauge problem for 4.0

On a cold day, after about 10-15 miles of driving, the temp gauge on my truck will barely leave the cold mark, but the heater works fine. In the morning when i start it the temp gauge is way below the cold mark and slowly creeps up just past the cold mark. Just trying to figure out whats wrong before i replace parts. This is on a 98 4.0 with a non tach gauge cluster.

Its probably just the temp sensor itself. I was just saying in another thread about how they are not accurate. Try replacing the sensor and see what it does or doesn't do.

What would be the reason for the gauge to be way below the cold mark when first started.

it could be. Im not sure which one it is. I think there are two, one for the computer, one for the gauge. The gauge is just resistance kinda deal, with getting hot and cold all the time it is possible it is reading inaccuratly

Replace the electronic body module and your problems are over. Dont leave it as it wont register overheating until its too late..
