Default Fuel Mileage Issues 11-12 mpg

I'm new here, found this somewhat by accident, but decided to rack some brains to help solve this.

Had the truck since new, always averaged 17-20, as i don't get on the freeway much around here, currently has 101,000 miles. Mileage started plummeting around three months ago.

I changed the plugs and wires with motorcraft parts then, changed the air filter, and have drove it approximately 1000 miles. Mileage has not improved.

I haved pulled the codes, and the 2 i got were a P1311 and a C6200, if that helps any.

And would you go with a factory air filter, or upgrade to a K&N drop in?

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry, i thought i added that. I changed the fuel filter at the same time as the plugs, also with a Motorcraft part.

Try checking the o2 sensors as well if you haven't done so already.

I can't help on the codes though, sorry

Oh, and welcome to FRF !!

Searching here are some links for the codes you pulled. Notice 2 mention not using a dedicated reader (usually a programmer) as an issue. Looks like it may be an Oxygen sensor that needs replacing.

Hope this helps. Also the drop in K&N is a good choice..will save money in time vs the throw away paper ones. A new one is pre-oiled !!!! When you eventually clean it and re-oil it be careful..adding too much oil will foul your Mass Air Sensor.

I'm going to clean the MAF sensor tomorrow afternoon, and reset the computer. Is unhooking the battery, turning key on, hitting brake pedal and waiting thirty minutes good enough?

Also, i did use a Edge Evolution programmer to pull the codes..... it tells tranny line pressure, which i was checking.

How do you check O2 sensors, and roughly what do they cause to replace.

I cheched the tailpipe after a 50 mile trip today, and there is no soot in the exhaust, so i'm wondering if it's rich, or i have other problems.

And where do you pull seafoam into the vacuum line to clean it? I've never had to do much to this truck, so i have no clue what is what under there, lol.

I dont think you have to do all that. Just unhook the battery and let it sit is all I ever do...

SeaFoam

STL put some pics up in this thread of the line location. I did this and its really a piece of cake.

Aight. thanks guys..... i'm a little lost with these motors. the last gas burner i had was a 850cfm quadrajet on a 383, so the whole computerized deal befuddles me. i'm pretty slick with cummins p and rotary pumps in the dodges, and the pt systems, but all the extra crap on these little motors is confusing. i do appreciate the help

The Edge Evolution Programmer is questionable. So would be most 'Programmers'. You can purchase a proper code reader from many auto parts stores like UAP...some only cost 20 bucks. Seafoam is questionable...98% of old drivers with long owned vehicles never used it. Proper maintenance with a fuel injected vehicle includes using fuel injector cleaner every once in a while. The stronger/more expensive ones are good for 3,000kms/5,000 miles. A stuck up fuel injector could cause mileage..amongst other problems. A Oxygen sensor not working right can cause your problem. Here is a link to an explanation of that and how to check it. Google...oxygen sensor check...for other opinions...vary the wording to see even more opinions.

An oxygen sensor isn't too much............... http://www.partstrain.com/store/inde...xygen%20Sensor

I would definitely change the o2 sensor. I had a similar problem in my 91, changed the o2 and it was back to normal.

now one more question, i climbed under the truck to look around, and i noticed three sensors in the exhaust. one in the left bank pre-cat, one in the right bank pre cat, and another in the crossover i think. they all had four wires. are these the right sensors? and where do they plug in to the main harness? it looked like you took about a 18 mm wrench and just unscrewed them? or am i way off base?

o2 sensors will not drop your mileage that drastically. all they do is tell the computer to lean out or richen up. pull your plugs, take a look at how they are burning, if they are all black and suited up then o2 needs replacing. If they are burning clean then thats not your problem. I had the drivers side o2 sensor wires fall down on the front driveshaft once and it was making the drivers side bank run rich because the wires were all chewed up and touching one another.
