sure some of the 4.0 guys will chime in soon. if it's not the belt. (take it off and try a cold start) then might be the cam positioning sensor

hmmm ok well i was listening to the engine earlier today and it sounds like it is coming somewhere from the back of the engine near the front of the cab...i just have no idea what it is and was hoping for some suggestions...its been going on for about a month now. sometimes it will squeak and then it wont at all, its the weirdest thing but super annoying. and im pretty sure its not the belt i just replaced it (the truck was squeaking before replacement)

Welcome to FRF, I say belt tensioner. If that is the problem the underdrive pulley may help

With the engine running, rub a bar of soap on the edges and back of belt and see if it quiets down. No it won't make it slip. Antifreeze, Armor All and other stuff makes the belt work like rosin on a violin bow and squeak. It's not a cure, won't last but good diagnostic tool. Fan blades will be really, really close to your knuckles but Hey you're a Ranger Man, Right?

ya it just sounds like it is coming from the back of the engine when i pop the hood. it might be engine echo from the tensioner but its not a constant squaek. itll go in and out at higher and lower pitches for seconds at a time. sometimes itll be constant but then other times it wont make any noise at all... i have no idea what it is but i am going to replace the tensioner this weekend to see if thats it cause it is driving me crazy. and i just put a new belt on about a month agao and i know it is not the belt because with the old one the same noise was occuring

----------

some of my friends said its probably the bearings in some of the pulley wheels

I recently bought a 99' 2WD ext cab ranger with the 3.0. I encountered the squeaky belt soon after buying it. Here is what I did to fix it:

1: replaced belt with a Duralast belt from autozone. (Still squeaking)

2: Spray the new belt with belt dressing. (Quit squeaking for a few minutes then the squeak became worse than before spraying belt dressing)

3: Removed the belt cleaned the belt with mineral spirits and then washed with soap and water. Cleaned pulleys with mineral spririts and a brush, then rinsed them with accetone. reinstalled Duralast belt. (still squeaking)

4: Replaced idler and tensioner pulleys. Reinstalled Duralast belt (They needed replaced anyway but still squeaking)

5: cleaned pulleys with a die grinder and a wire wheel. Reinstalled Duralast belt (still squeaking)

6: Replaced the Duralast belt with a Dayco belt from Autozone. (Have driven approximately 400miles no squeak so far)

1. Diagnose problem with bar of soap and determine it's just a squeky belt and nothing that's going to cause problems.

2. Ignore. Life's too short to try to fix things that don't need to be fixed.

It did need fixed it is annoying when I pull up to the bank teller and I have to shut my truck off to talk to the teller because my belts is chirping. THe only reason I posted my experience is so that other guys could see how I fixed it and it might help others out.

Fair enough.
I have to walk in front of mine to hear it. It's OK if people in the crosswalk hear me.
