Default Broke Vacuum line - What is it?

While changing my spark plugs and wires I broke one of the small plastic vacuum lines. I have no idea what the line is for. The engine is a 4.0 in a 1996 Ranger. This vacuum line runs from on top of the engine near the coil pack/intake runner to a ball shaped piece under the air intake/air filter housing. This ball shaped thing has two vacuum lines connected to it. The line was brittle and I accidentally broke it into several pieces. I put plugs on the ends of the vacuum line where it broke and the truck still runs fine. What is this line for? Where can I get a replacement line? Is this something any auto parts place will carry or something that needs to be ordered from Ford?

Thanks, John

Any chance someone could still answer this question? I broke the lines going to the EGR solenoid and would like to replace hoses. One of which runs to the same spot this guy mentioned. I've got lots of other questionable hoses as well. Sizes and suggestions? Thanks.

just bring in a piece thats still intact to a parts place to find a correct size. sounds like its for the cruise control. you dont have to get the correct vaccum line, any line will work as long as it supplies vacuum to the cruise. good luck.

That is for the HVAC. It goes from the vacuum port, to that magical vacuum reservoir orb. Then from the magical orb, it goes through the firewall to the HVAC panel. The air dampers that select panel, floor, defrost, etc etc are all vacuum operated. Also, the outside air damper and the hot water shut-off valve are vacuum operated.

So, with that vacuum line disconnected.....
- You will have a huge vacuum leak
- Your HVAC will be stuck on defrost only
- Your outside air shut off and Max AC will not work
- Your hot water shut-off will not operate in Off and Max AC.

No. It's for the HVAC exactly as I just described.

I'd really like a picture of this. I can only run defrost on my truck, the others stopped working.

It's easy. Look under the air filter box. It's the only thing there that looks like a black ball with vacuum hoses on it. Trace the vacuum lines and find the break or disconnect.

So does anyone know a quick fix for replacing this vacuum line? Ford has discontinued the part. Can it be replace with a small rubber line or does it need to be the thin hard plastic line?
