Default What oil do you use in your 4.0?

My new (new to me) 02 V6 4L is due for an oil change in about 1000 miles. I'm wondering what other 4.0L owners are using? Have some changed oils due to more wear (miles) on their engine? My 02 has only 53,000, besides wear, do you think age on the gaskets could be a factor in oil consideration?

Here are the Questions:
► What Brand of oil and grade (i.e. 5w-30)? If not using 5w-30 why?
► Do you use regular mineral base oil or synthetic, and why?
► What Brand & part number of oil filter do you prefer? How often should the oil filter be changed?
► Do you do your own oil change or have a service (i.e. Quick Lube) do the change?
► If you use a service who do you prefer and why?

Is there anything I should know about engine oil for the Ranger 4.0 that you have learned?

Your help is appreciated.....

I use 5-w30 dino oil . truck has 165,000 miles
I use whatever is on sale change every 3000 miles, walmart here has valvoline on sale for $15 for 5 qts. so that has been used last and do the oil /filter change myself.
only because last time I took a jeep in to have oil/filter and grease job they tried putting grease in the brake bleeder fittings no shit so I do not trust anyone now

Go get a Motorcraft 820 oil filter and 5 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-30. That is what the truck was made with, thats what should be in the truck.

Not to mention, it wont cost but about $18

That's what I use because I feel it's the best. But I'm sure any oil the correct weight changed every 3000 miles would work.

I use Castrol synthetic 5w-30 and Fram synthetic filters. And I change my own oil. Been using it in all my vehicles for years now and no problems yet. Change it every 7,000km. I only buy my filters and oil when on sale, and I buy two filters and 10 liters everytime (two complete oil changes / one in the kitty at all times just incase there's now sales on when it comes time for an oil and filter change). Generally runs about $35 to $40 per oil and filter change. Cheap insurance I'd say.

I would suggest sticking with the type of oil that came in the truck, the important part to an oil filter change on a Ford is that the Oil Filter only be replaced with a Motorcraft or Ford Racing oil filter. Reason being: the vast majority of your "aftermarket" (ie Fram, Duralast, etc.) do not have a check valve. Therefore on start up, you would have a "dry" start. The most common failure to all ford engines when I work at the dealer here in Georgia. Your owners manual, if you have one, should have 5w20 synthetic blend. I know you can buy it the Wal-Mart along with the oil filter

i agree. i use it because every vehicle ive owned ive used it in and ive never (knock on wood) had any mechanical engine failures and i really drive my stuff hard. i know everyone has there opinion on what oil is best, when to change it, what filter to use ect ect but its all personal preference really.

Just for referance the Fram filter I use does have •Silicone anti-drainback valve holds a reserve of oil in the filter to help protect the engine during start-ups. I am a mechanic and am aware of this. Ford for 5 years of many. But you are right, buyer beware not all filters are made equal or have this option.

Havoline 5W30 with Motorcraft filter. Always buy a Motorcraft filter... the truck was made with one... keep using them...
