Default 92 4.0 BAD gas milage

Hello my ranger is gettin terrible gas milage i averaged it out to be about 9.6 miles to the gallon. It has new spark plugs and air filter so im not quite sure why the gas milage is so bad if anyone has any ideas let me know. Thanks

How is it running otherwise? Fuel injectors bad maybe? MAF sensor dirty? Timing off? Anything below about 15-20 MPG is pretty poor. No check engine light?

I see you have a 4wd. I don't know what the average for a 4wd but I get around 18-20mpg with my 92, 2wd, 4.0, Auto. Maybe try a fuel system cleaner and change the fuel filter.

It's just a thought but you may have a dragging brake drum in the rear.

My friend was experiencing the same excessive fuel mileage with his ranger, and he traced it to a broken spring on one of the shoe assemblies behind the drum causing drag.

It could be another variable to consider once you've exhausted the more ovbious ones.

my '94 4.0 used to average 11 mpg. is your truck manual or automatic? did you recently install a new muffler or exhaust? also what size tires are you running?

Theres no check engine light it still runs good. I just changed the fuel filter not long ago. Im thinking it could be the brake drum drag because my brakes have been acting up so i changed the front pads which it needed it but they still feel funny i wouldnt doubt that one ill have to check it out. Also yea i just put a new exhaust on it not long ago with a new muffler it is a automatic and the tires are only little like 255s im thinking there not big tires at all. Ill check these things out hopefully i can figure it out. And the gas milage for the 4wd is the same as the 2wd i should be getting around 18-20 the lift might hurt it a little but not this much.

Did you notice the drop in mileage after installing the exhaust/muffler? is it a performance exhaust or oem replacement?

performace its a cherry bomb muffler with 2 1/4 pipe off cats to muffler and then 2 1/2 inch out the passanger side in front of the rear tire it also had a 3 inch tip and no not really just lately i have been really paying attention to the gas milage and it hasnt been good i just filled the truck with 93 octane and put lucas oil injector cleaner into the gas to clean it out a little and have that gas burn a little hotter to see what that will do but the exhaust hasnt really hurt anything. And would my exhaust really hurt my gas milage that much ? because the exhaust that was on it had leaks on the gasket on the cats and it leaked on my muffler to so im sure that didnt help the gas milage any.

Well the reason why I asked about the exhaust is some guys when they install aftermarket exhaust wind the truck out more and rev higher and dont realize that theyre doing it and then the gas mileage suffers because of it.

I'd look into the brake drum issue stated above and go from there. Did you notice a miss or bucking at anytime?

Check your air filter as well. check inside the air box too to make sure nothing is in there.
