Default Metal Shavings in Oil

Changed my oil this morning and found what appear to be metal shavings. I have heard a very faint and intermittent knock from time to time after the engine has warmed up. Now I have to wonder if I have a main bearing issue. Could someone shed some light? I have basic skills and tools to work with so how big a job is it to swap out bearings if needed? Thanks.

Main bearings are not hard to change, getting to them is the bitch. You are going to either need to pull your engine, or drop your entire front axle so that you can remove the pan.
