anything before 95 should do in without too many problems. as far as the trans goes, you need to get one from a 4.0.

yeah, the only trans that will bolt to a 4.0 is a 2.9, but the 2.9 is much weaker and may not last very long behind a 4.0

You'll definately need the transmission with the 4.0L. But if there's a wiring harness, be sure to take it just in case

Probably the best donor vehicle to look for would be an Explorer from the early 90s. Buy the whole thing. Swap the engine, tranny, transfer case into your ranger.

You will then have the parts to swap in the D35 axle (front) and 8.8" axle (rear) from the explorer into your ranger. Both are far better then the D28 (front) and 7.5" (rear) you are running now.

I would shoot for a wiring harness from an early 90's (earlier than '93) 4.0L Ranger. Think that would be easiest since it's from a Gen-II Ranger, but may be harder to come by.

DO they even make explorers in 5 speed? because i want to keep it stick. i been looking at the 4.0 OHV motors, so hopefully i find one at the junk yard and start the rebuilding process. Are the axles a must or just for extra strength?
