Default No compression on driver side three cylinders

Hi There, I am new to the forum as of today. My 04 Ranger has been idling really rough with engine light on. I checked the codes and it says "multiple misfires". I took it to two mechanics (one being my brother in law). Both said I have no compression on two driver side cylinders and vary low on the other one on same side. B. I. L mechanic said it will take exploratory surgery to find exactly whats wrong and that the heads have to come off. My question is: Is there any threads that will show me some sort of step by step instructions and/or what to watch out for? My brother in law said he would help off and on, but I feel I can do it myself. He said if his shop does it, it's costly Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks...

Well for starters we would need to see your compression readings. Depending on the numbers the failure could be catastrophic or minor. Also have the codes for us as well....

Was told zero on the two cylinders towards the firewall on drivers side and 30 on the third cylinder on same side. It's all three on the same side (drivers side). The other three on opposite side are reading fine. I do not have the codes as the mechanic put his gages on it. Does this help??
