Question 4.3 Vortec vs 4.0 OHV vs 4.0 SOHC

So what you guys think?? Ive driven all 3 honestly i like the low end torque from the OHV. The 4.3 is straight gutless to me, the SOHC is quick and all but its all high end torque which i dont like, and the OHV has a low end torque but less power as well.... Jus my opinion tho, what you think??

They all have their pros and cons.

IMO it's like duramax, powerstroke, and cummins. They are all great buys, but it's hard to say if one is better than the other.

Default Re: 4.3 Vortec vs 4.0 OHV vs 4.0 SOHC

ive owned 2 different trucks with the 4.0 OHV, i own a blazer with the 4.3 and my 2001 ranger with the 4.0 SOHC and i would take the SOHC over the others in a heartbeat. as far as the "low end torque" of the OHV 4.0 i dont buy it. i hear people say it all the time but i never thought the off the line TQ of the OHV was any better than my SOHC. the TQ numbers for both motors are as follows. 225 @ 2750 RPM for the OHV and 238 @ 3000 for the SOHC so the SOHC makes its TQ only 250 RPMS higher but its also making 13 more. all of them are really good motors though, the 4.3 can make some good power if built right and the OHV 4.0 is pretty much bulletproof but for all around driving and towing the SOHC takes it hands down.

It also depends what the 4.3 is in for comparison purposes as well. Weight vs Power remember.

the weight of the vehicle, the transmission, and the rear end ratio makes a big difference.

my truck is just a little bit faster all around than my moms explorer with the SOHC and automatic tranny but then again an explorer is a bit heavier than a ranger

Ya, but if all of them were bone stock, all were 5 speeds, and all had the same driver i would still take the OHV. I jus think its better, the SOHC is more of a car engine then a truck engine. Agian jus my opinion but i feel like im driving a truck with the OHV rather then ether of those other engines. Dont get me wrong the SOHC is a great... jus not for a truck....

have you ever pulled a load with the SOHC? you wont think that its a car motor anymore if you do. dont get me wrong, the OHV is a solid motor but the SOHC beats it hands down in every way IMO. for the record, i owned two OHV's both in extended cab 4x4's one a stick and the other an auto and both were great trucks but i would put my 01 SOHC auto 4x4 extended cab up against my old trucks any day of the week, especially with a trailer on it.

On Sept. 16, I special ordered a 2011 Ford Ranger XL. They informed me that I would receive it in six to eight weeks. I would appreciate any feedback on this model. I ordered it with a 4L automatic overdrive.

Now listen all, I like the OHV, simply because I have never had a SOHC. LOL

But, I have pulled 7k lbs on weight on my OHV when it was an auto. And let me tell ya, it worked the shit out of it.

It pulled it for 40 miles at 35mph, but I got it there. lol

The weight was a 2500lb horse trailer with 10 square of shingles in it with a complete motor and transmission for my 98 2.5 in the bed of the truck.

I have gone head to head with my buddys s10 that had the 4.3 vortec. He beat me hands down. But, he has a 2wd short box reg cab also and I have 4x4 ext cab so there is a little bit of a weight advantage.

Also I dont think comparing the 4.3 vortec to the 4.0 OHV is a comparable match. Maybe 4.3 std. to 4.0 OHV and 4.3 vortec to 4.0 SOHC.
