timing chain?
I was just talking to my buddy about replacing the water pump and timing belt in my truck because it has gone over 108k. He told me it has a timing chain, and if the pump isnt leaking then dont bother. He said the only time you need to do those replacements are when something goes wrong such as the leak. I always thought those were a routine maintenance type deal isn't it? I also didn't know it was a timing chain either

Re: timing chain?
our engines suck in order to do both chains you have to pull the motor but if you only do one cartridge as they call it you don't have to pull motor I think it is the left side, not sure off the top of my head now.

Re: timing chain?
yeah clinton the SOHC 4.0s actually multiple timing chains (3 or 4) and 2 are in the back of the motor if i recall correctly. so if they arent broke, dont fix em! lol

Re: timing chain?
Books says the engine HAS to come out for the pushrod engine only because of the oil pan. You gotta remove the engine to remove the oil pan. What's the oil pan got to do with the timing chain? I dunno I'm writin' what mah book says.
With the SOHC engine it's recommended to remove it and bolt it to a stand because to leave it in would require all the special tools and technical information of a fully equipped dealership. Which to me is saying yeah it's gotta come out if you ever need to do it and want it to go smoothly.
Do these timing chains have built in tensioners to keep 'em tight as they wear? I believe so. Pretty smart design.

Re: timing chain?
Wow, Great thread.
I am also at 108 and was asking around about this.
I blew a timing chain in a talon one time and the cylinders all slammed into the valves, then the car got sold.
Is this what would happen with the sohc also?
