Default Gas Mileage Results

2003 Ranger FX4 Level II - 149k - Stock

I drive a lot... mostly highway, some city. Probably a 75-25 mix. I am one of those people who posted looking for gas mileage results before I made my purchase. The attached chart might help some people know what to expect. I've had my truck for 3 months now, and absolutely love it. The gas mileage is a little low, my 3.0L 4x4 got 25mpg, but not bad considering the engine and averages I've seen.

I hope it helps.

I HAD a 93... but I didn't keep the records on it like I do this one, I just calculated mileage between fill-ups and didn't jot it down. The '93 sold this past Tuesday.

I would love to get the kind of gas mileage you are getting. I average no more than 17mpg out of my 03 FX4.

I also like to track my mileage (and the cost to run it). I never thought to include the high and low temps through the duration of a given tank though!

I tend to keep 2 spreadsheets for any vehicle: Fuel Economy and a Maintenance Record, as I do most upkeep work myself, and it's a good place to note work I've had done at or upgrades applied.

Here's a revised version... including this month and making a few formula changes in October, and updating the average temp calc for each month. I also did a calc in the top corner to determine maximum mileage per tank at the average, low, and high MPG ratings I've gathered. That helps me know if I want to risk skipping that last station for the next 30miles if I already have 295 on the tank. 5% fluff for safety. ;-)

I pulled a 16' trailer loaded with drywall about 120 miles on 11/6/10, that's why I dropped below 18mpg for the first time.

Oh, this is a 4.0L... the 3.0L was in my '93 model.

@wintermute: I keep up with my investment in a vehicle too. I like to see my miles per dollar of investment. Right now, since I've only had this truck 5 months or so, I'm at 1.52 miles per dollar of investment. I sold a Geo Tracker just before I bought this truck & it was @ 8.42 miles per dollar. My '93 ranger was @ 7.01 miles per dollar. It takes time to get the average up there, but with low maintenance costs, it goes up. These dang BFG AT's are really gonna hurt that number when they need replaced tho. They are expensive... but worth it. I keep up with the temps because I'm looking for anything that causes my mileage to fluctuate, other than my driving habits. That's why I marked the date the winterblend gas is inserted. I also note when I take unusual trips, or have an unsual situation on the receipt... like pulling the 16' trailer.

I hope this helps.

Wow, wish I was getting that kind of mpg. I've had my 4.0 ranger for about 2 months and average 15 around town and got 17.5 when it was 90% highway. I guess you don't buy a truck for good mileage though
