I drive an hour to work each way everyday. Its been VERY cold here lately too. It just started last night when it was snowing. Doesnt matter where it is in 2wd or 4wd. 40-45 is where it starts. I cant seem to figure out how to make it happen. Last night I kindof made it happen on command. light throttle at 45 around a long turn. BTW it was in 2wd at this time.

this is weird....could snowflakes somehow be getting on a sensor. ie. the maf. or could there be a vacuum leak that suck in snowflakes and effects a sensor?.........

Re: Random misfires when it snows
I started this thread, but sorry to say I haven't found anything yet which appears to be the key to solving the problem. Unfortunately, we still haven't had enough snow here to see if the problem still exists. So much for the big blizzard; we only got 1/2" here in northern Vermont and I haven't been out driving in it.
I find the bucking happens in 2WD as well as 4WD. Also at local and highway speeds, accelerating and coasting. When I changed the plugs and wires well before the recommended time, all of the plugs were identical at the tip ends, just like the book said they should look like. The other night coming home in freezing rain (air temp below 32º) there was no hesitation.

lol, i feel the same way as you. ITs also very very annoying that my last truck and this truck are both affected. lol
alright so I drove about 30 miles today and nothing happened. drove like normal. Even if snow is on the ground its fine. It just messes up when it snows.
I wonder if we can data log this with imput from the abs system. I wonder if the abs is tapping one caliper. maybe not, because if it was, wouldnt it pull?
hah, just thinking out loud

Re: Random misfires when it snows
I have a similar post from last week and didn't bother to add with my problem that it was snowing at the time since I didn't think that really should effect anything. Oddly enough I haven't had it out in a snow since and I haven't had the missfire since then. Mine is an '06.

Re: Random misfires when it snows
Chris, do you have a Cold Air intake?
I installed mine in April of '08, didnt start having this trouble until the next winter. Could be something to do with that???

I did but I took it off a few weeks ago.

guys,
I made a thread on r-f and there are a few others having the same issue. One guy has a data-logger and he said he will datalog the truck next time it snows!

You're right though. Data logging would be key to seeing the PCMs immediate response. I believe all it takes is a laptop, logging software, and a cable. Almost makes me wish I were having this problem since I actually have that stuff! I wouldn't know a damn thing about how to interpret the data but I could post it. Including data from abs would be a tall order though.
EDIT -- The only other scenario I can think of is that snow is suspended in the air and goes where it goes much more easily than drops of rain. If it flurried up into the engine bay ... yeah ridiculous ... but is anyone who is having this issue able to notice any moisture accumulation in the air filter?

Re: Random misfires when it snows
Highway speed jerking/bucking
dude, this sounds like my problem..
one question..do you have a K&N filter by chance? If so, did you use the sticky gasket that came with it? I installed one this fall and I did not use it...Does seem like it has happened to me since I installed it...last winter I had no problems.
Otherwise, I do have a slow leak in one tire...but I stay on top of it and it does not seem to care if the pressure is low or not.
----------
Actually it seems like (after reading the post thoroughly) that we may be on to something with the intakes....Lets try to compile who has this problem versus the type of intake/filter used and see if we can find a common denominator.

Re: Random misfires when it snows
mine is all stock.
----------
now, i plan on buying another stock intake and modify the inlet and see if that solves my problem.
Ive also thought about buying one of the cheap 'spy' style cameras with leds and putting it behind the maf to see if any snow gets up in the actual intake. Of course, ill have to modify another intake hose and make a screen to go over the throttle body inlet.

Called them today. The chain of command at Ford means I have to go to the dealer and convince them to get an regional Ford Engineering Tech to visit the dealer to look at the problem.
I may try that although it's a pain and I wonder how many tests and new parts ($$$) they will do before calling in the "expert".
Going back to an earlier post about the possibility of an ABS problem causing the bucking, I found that it can hiccup in the snow both under light throttle going downhill and heavy throttle accelerating or going up hill. The effect is definitely more pronounced under load. To me, this rules out an ABS cause which would be the same in either instance. Also the effect is the same on a snow packed surface as when I have good traction. Wouldn't an ABS spike be more severe in the later case?

yeah, I ruled out the abs thing right after I typed it. The truck would also pull to one side if it was the abs. Also, to really elimiate it, I could pull the abs fuse and drive it while its happening.
