Well I have a K&N and it has not done it since that one day driving home. My K&N fits into the filter box SUPER snug and the gasket and latches close tightly. Maybe it was just having hiccups? its been about 1000 miles since the last time it did it, and I've been in multiple snowstorms since..... wierd I tell you.......

I just bjoined this Forum last month and came across this thread. I have 2006 XL with the 6 cyl. engine. The mechanic in our truck garage and I have been trying to find a problem similar to this. The difference is mine only does it in 4 wheel drive and it feels like I missed a gear. (my Ranger is automatic) We have had it to a transmission garage and they had the transfer case appart and checked the front axles , etc. and still cannot find the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
Also I am not the best at computers, how do you start a new Thread in here?
Thanks
Mike

lebomike- Couldn't help but wonder if it is snowing each time that you switch to 4WD. Seems to be the common denominator in this thread.
Just sayin.

mine does it without snow, it actually feels like I hit a pot hole in the road when mine kicks in. I have a 14 mile commute to work each day and it will do it weather it is snowing or not.

that is what mine felt like but only when it snows.

check and see if your filter top is on tight. Also, when was the last time the sparkplugs were changed? how many miles?

Not the same vehicle but many toyota vehicles running oiled intake filters get oil on the filament inside the MAF hence providing incorrect readings to pcm - Mass air flow sensors operate very similar to a light bulb heating the element and measuring the voltage required at the element to keep at a certain temp hence calculating intake air volume or 'mass'. Try cleaning the maf filament with electrical cleaner (solvent) and see what happens. DO NOT clean within 10 minutes after shutting the vehicle off and allow to completely dry prior to reinstallation (15-20 minutes)

Lebomike. The issue is from your axle correct? not an engine misfire right? Your front axles should be live. Live means the wheels are always connected to the axle. Is it one particular wheel? maybe your CV joint is acting up, but only shows it when it is under power?

Lebomike- Check out the front drive shaft. I have an explorer all wheel drive that had a clunking sound and feel. It was a little frightening went it clunked. Shops changed the transfer case twice and problem came back each time. I removed the front drive shaft and found it to be defective. Replaced and no more clunk. It cost me $500 to get rid of my clunker and I got to keep the truck

Dubbya, we just changed the two front axles and the cv joints and we still have the clunk. It is random and feels like i hit a pothoile in the road, we are going to take it back to the transmission garage next week and have him tear the transfer case appart and see if we can find this.

it is very frustrating...

Lebomike- The shops changed one axle on mine and then changed the transfer case twice. Be sure to check out the joint on the front drive shaft not the axle as that is where my problem was. The joint should go in and out smoothly. I had to find it myself. It may not be the same problem as I had, but it sounds familliar to what happened to me. Good Luck

I thought I was through with this misshap, but I had my truck just do the "pothole" feeling twice on the way home the other day from work. It hasn't done this in about 1500+ miles.... it was barely snowing out, and about 0-5 degrees outside.... so I'm kinda at a loss as to what this random lurch could be caused by.....

Recap- My 2004-4.0L-XLT-4x4 had been doing the "lurch" "speedbump" "pothole" feeling sparatically a few months back while driving home in the snow, in 4x4 or just in 2wd it still did it (right around 40mph if that matters).
Now as for common maintenance done to remove some possibilities:
Spark plugs are all new as of the middle of last year, tranny fluid was fully flushed at the same time. Air filter box is definately tight around the filter, and the MAF is definately clean as its been cleaned well with MAF cleaner spray. All 4 tires are the same, and all 4 have the same amount of tread and air pressure, as they too were all new as of the middle of last year. My 4x4 works as it should, and the truck drives just fine normally. The brakes and wheel hubs & bearings were also replaced with new ones at the middle of last year.... all of the shafts and rotating parts have been lubed up regularly as well, and the oil is changed every 3,000miles with the recommended oil and filter........

This is definately a very well maintained truck.......SO.... I'm at a loss, what could cause this!

Mine is a 2006 XLT, 70550 miles and has had new plugs at 60k and last week new front shafts on both sides, and a new Motorcraft air filter, all tires are the same wear as just put them on back at 54k,so I have basicaslly the same setup and still have the pothole slam , however I only get the slam in 4 wheel drive, runs fine in 2 wheel. We are taking mine to the transmission shop on Monday 2-14, and he is going to take transfer case etc., appart and try to see what may be causing this problem, we have checked the front drive shaft visually and it seems to be ok.
It is very annoying to have this problem. If this does not fix it I am going to contact FORD and have their factory rep come and tell me what they think.
Will keep you abreast of what happens.

Mike
