Sounds like some good ideas, I'll check my filter cover tomorow and let everyone know its condition. Just for more data my truck has stock filter and intake and exhaust.

Also today (when this started happening) there were flakes in the air but dry pavement so I agree we can rule out bad road conditions.

Alright, so I went down to my local Ford dealer and described our problem to the electrical technician and the first thing he asked me was "are you running an aftermrket air filter?"
Now I have to apologize because I stated above that my truck had the stock filter in it. That was just my assumption and it turned out to be wrong. Whoever owned it last had put a K&N filter in it. The guy at Ford said they had been having this problem a lot with aftermarket filters. He suggested I try an OEM filter and then go from there. If the problem persisted he would have to have a look at my MAS and the rest of the intake... Well it as snowing here today and the truck was running like crap so I put the new Motorcraft filter in it and as of right now I would say problem solved. I will obviously post to confirm after it snows next but it has stopped here for now.

This is just my opinion but once I saw the construction of the OEM filter versus the thin little K&N filter it seems pretty likely this is the case. The OEM fits much more snug in the filter box then the K&N.

Well my K&N is SUPER snug in there just like the stocker... I think that because of the massive amount of air that it lets through that the stocker does not, that somehow it was messing with the MAF. I have not had the issue lately... but it also hasn't been snowing out there really. It is coming down today pretty good, so I'll have to wait and see if it does it on my journey home and down to southern Ohio this weekend.

I just got my ranger 2 days ago and this has already happened to me twice. Dealer said they couldn't replicate. Going to check the air filter to see if the previous owner installed a K&N

Just checked. It has an old dirty Fram in it. It was not seated correctly. Is it common for the filter to unseat as you remove the top filter box?

From the OP:
Well it snowed in VT and sure enough my '02, 4.0L acted up again. Both with fine dry snow and thicker, wetter snow. All in 2WD.
I have put the question to the service mgr. at my local dealer and asked for tech assistance. I gave him all the thoughts from this thread and he seems to have taken it on as a challenge. He agrees that it's not a problem with the air filter, that it most likely is electrical rather than fuel. His opinion is that rain would be more of a problem for the MAF than snow flakes. He has faxed all the comments I gave him from this group to the Ford tech.
Just to be sure I checked my air filter again which was a Purolater and had been in for only 12K miles. I replaced it with an OEM Motorcraft just to eliminate one more question mark raised by this group. But they are so identical that I suspect they are made in the same plant. Identical number of pleats, same size, and no chance that either one would pass anything around the gasket. I don't know about aftermarket K&N units, mine is strictly stock.
Hopefully I've got the attention of someone further up in the Ford organization. I made the point that mine is not an isolated case and that a solution or explanation would make a lot of frustrated owners very happy.
Wish me luck!

There was a real fine snow tonight while driving on the highway and my truck acted up once. As soon as that happened I turned off overdrive and tried to keep the truck above 2500RPM(pretty easy on the highway as long as you keep it around 55) any ways it didn't happen again and seemed to really help the last time I tried it. Just something for you guys to try and maybe help someone troubleshoot the problem.

I hope you guys arent making this more complicated then it has to be. I drove my truck to the dealership in the snow and it acted up the whole way. (before I left I made sure my filter box and filter were fitted and properly secured) I purchased the motorcraft filter and installed it in the parking lot at the dealership. Including that day I have driven it in the snow five days with ZERO problems. When I described the problems to the tech he immediatly said air filter and that it was a common problem. I think for ~$30 its worth a try.

I agree that it could be something much more complicated but everyone that has reported this problem in this thread is not running a factory air filter...

well I went to tedbritt ford (my local dealer) and bought a filter. The filter in my factory box was NOT a factory filter but something else. The ford filter seemed to fit much better and the top box clips seemed to be more snug when snapped in. Hopefully this fixes my issue. I will know soon as we are expecting snow.

for what its worth, I talked to a few guys here and everyone looked at me like I was crazy. lol

Put a Purolator in the other day(Fit much more snug than the old fram). Drove home from work tonight , about 25 miles, thru pretty heavy snow and didn't have any issues. I am going to agree with everyone else that an aftermarket air filter could be the issue.

yup. def the issue.

I replaced mine with an oem ford today, and it didnt to it in todays snow storm. The oem one's gasket was alot thicker and the filter fit in the bottom box much snugger than the fram that was in my truck. also the snaps were alot firmer/harder to put in.

looks like fram not only fails at making oil filters
