Default 2004 Ranger (4.0) High Idle when first starting???

I own a 2004 Ford Ranger , 5 speed with 69,000 miles. It has new plugs, new fuel filter, air filter, oil changed and all fluids checked and topped off to the required levels. I also checked the PVC valve (ok). Cleaned the IAC by way of directions on this forum and it really didn't need it because it was clean to start with.

My question is this........

When I first start my truck I get a rather high idle and it seems to hang there for quite sometime longer than usual. Is this normal? Is there something that can be checked for this or replaced? I'm curious if other Ranger owners experience this also.

Thanks!

here, this is a bulletin from the dealership that may help you.

TSB 05-5-10

03/21/05

HIGH IDLE BETWEEN SHIFTS OR IN NEUTRAL - 4.0L
ENGINE WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION

FORD:
2004-2005 Ranger

ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 Rangers equipped with a 4.0L engine and manual transmission, may exhibit a higher than expected idle between shifts, during a coast down with the clutch depressed, or with the transmission in neutral.

ACTION
Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration level using WDS release B35.9 and higher, or B36.2 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.

This sounds like my problem right here.

I'm guessing I have to go to the dealers and they can address this? Will they charge me for a service like this?

Thanks

Unfortunately no, unless you know someone with an IDS or WDS. Just go in there and tell them you want the ECM/PCM updated and thats all you want, you have to stern with these guys as times are tough and they will try to up sell any and everything to you. They may hit you with some stuff like, "we can do this but if another issue occurs we will not be held responsible" just do the reflash and everything will be okay. Now something they may need to do, is reprogram your keys which part of the reprogram which only calls for 1.3 hours total, thats reprogram pcm/ecm and keys. PM if you have any other questions...

op, how high is your idle when you first start it?

Mine starts high too, but drops after about 5-10sec to normal fast idle. (starts at 2200 and drops to 1200)

that procedure will should help you, but it sounds like you may have an IAC concern bud

a new IAC will help, dont go cheap won't last. Went through a advance auto one in 2 months then a oriellys one in 6 months just buy a motorcraft one and be done. cheaper in the long run mine still idles high but not as bad with the correct IAC 1200 down to 1000 after driving for a little before was near 1400 1500 at start up
