Default 97 ranger 4.0 ohv studder when acelerating

i have a 97 ranger that i love to death but sometimes when i'm entering the highway on the on ramp i feel studdering (my engine is cutting out) once i reach the 55-70 mph mark. then it stops once i stay at a constant speed but starts up again when i need to speed up a little. my dad thinks its water in the gas tank and the whole studder thing stops when i put a bottle of heat in the gas tank. i did some research and it might be the mass airflow sensor. i do not know if there is anyone that's knows what it is and if there is any way to fix it please tell me

is it when the engine is over 3500 rpm? it could highly be the Cam position sensor on a 4.0L OHV it will send miss signals to the ignition side causing a cut out of spark. mine did this after replacing it problem gone

In addition to that, I would replace the fuel filter. Accelleration requires a lot more fuel than cruising and if its plugged up, it will not get enough to do the job. If pouring bottles of whatever in the tank alters the effect, I think you have at least narrowed it down to a fuel delivery problem. It's not water, the problem would be constant and go away once its gone.

Check for codes even if the CEL is off.do a tuneup= plugs, wires, pcv, airfilter, clean IACV, tb, MAF(the maf is at the begiining of the air intake hose use a can of maf cleaner $6). if that does not clear it up do a full fuel pressure test.

My 1999 Ranger is also doing this, it started a few weeks ago and I replaced the number 3 spark plug and it fixed it and it started to get really decent gas mileage (I've always has trouble with the number 3 spark plug...). Friday night I was cruising around town and it started again. I was going up a hill and the whole truck starts shaking and jerking and i had to pull over because I thought it was going to die. I popped it into neutral and revved it up a few times and my exhaust sounded weird. (my exhaust has no muffler and exits on the passenger side in front of the rear tire, so its pretty loud) but it sounded... awful. i parked the truck at a taco bell for a while and started it up to go to McDonald's for some food and it ran fine (I was taking it easy). but on the way home going up another hill is cut out like once or twice and that was it. just enough to feel it and hear it. Any idea? oh and i think my problem might be the fuel filter since it has never been changed and I'm at 212,000 miles. I think I'm going to do that when it gets light outside this morning...

cracked head. ouch!

oh and to kodyston, definatly change the fuel filter and the plugs/wires and check the air filter. it sounds dumb but these basic things can cause many differernt problems and can be overlooked by even the best mechanics

lol yeah I definitely need a new air filter (black soot on it) and fuel pump and spark plugs and wires. I have never changed the fuel filter and i have 212,000+ miles (yes... really lol) I have a fuel filter laying around here that my dad bought a while back if I can find it. But I'm pretty low of funds as I haven't had a job in a year. But I start my new job tomorrow so I should be able to do some tune up maintenance soon...

As I said in an earlier post my truck was also "studdering" when I would accelerate. well, the engine light came on Friday afternoon so I whipped it around and stopped by Advanced Auto Parts and had them hook it up to the computer. It read 'Cylinder 4 Misfire"... so yeah, I replaced my plugs to Bosch Super Plus Platinum and it fixed it. (for now... lol) and my transmission seems to be shifting a lot easier now too, and possibly a lot better gas mileage (I'll keep you updated on that). but... I never did get around to replacing that fuel filter... oh well I can do it this weekend or the next. just figured I'd let you guys know...

i later found out that one of the plug wires were going bad because the coil pack was causing one of the wires to short out. i was hoping that this was the problem because it was a cheaper fix but it ended up being a cracked head that was causing coolant to get into the cilender and making the engine miss fire when i pressed on the gas peddle.
