Default Coolant Leak Near Trans/Engine Interface

1995 4.0 Ranger with about 160K miles. Warm weather, no recent freeze.

Got home today and steam was pouring out from under hood. After cooldown, refilled radiator, started engine and after about 5 seconds could see no problem in engine compartment, but from underneath water was pouring down the right side of the engine where the engine and transmission mate up. From underneath can't see where it is coming from. From top side everything looks dry.

So, coming from rear area of engine. Definitely not radiator, rad hoses, heater hoses, or water pump.

What are the likely problems? Is this going to be a blown head gasket?

John

I spent about 15 minutes looking under the car and down into the engine compartment. I could not see any water or wettness in the engine compartment. I did not specifically look at the thermostat housing, but am sure I would have noticed if water was coming from that area.

And it wasn't just a seep, it was running water. Could have filled a quart jar in a couple of minutes.

sounds like either a bad lower intake gasket or a freeze plug. most likely the intake though. the gasket has a narrow spot on the very back were it is mated to the back of the head and if the intake blows out there coolant will piss out faster than you can put it in, had the exact thing happen in my 93 4.0. get under the truck and look up at the back of the head on either side and see if you see coolant coming from that area. while youre there you can also see the freeze plug on the back of each head to check if they are in place.

I don't have experience or space to check it out any further. Had it towed to an independent mechanic's garage yesterday.

My 99 is doing this, it seems like it is coming from under the heater core but not sure. please let me know what the mechanic determined and how he fixed it. thanks

Turned out to be the intake gasket. Water would pour out when the radiator was filled. Cost for work done by an independent mechanic was $410 including an oil change.

Okay thanks. I don't think that is whats wrong with mine. Mine is dripping really bad under the heater core. And I have to make sure I keep water in the radiator or it will drain it dry... any ideas?

I have a similar problem. I can't really see the leak and it doesn't seem to leak when I'm running. I only see it when it's been sitting over night. It seems to be dripping near the thermostat and not very much.
Do you think it could just be the thermostat?

Check your heater control valve. Passenger side of engine. Plastic valve. Two heater hoses in, two out to fire wall (heater core) and one small vacuum line. Mine cracked at a seam on the bottom side and dripped down looking like it was coming from the rear of the engine

^good place to check. That would make it leak down right on your headers and blow all kinds of smoke and drip about in the same spot your looking at. Mine blew off after I lifted my truck. Thought my engine was toast. Found plastic pieces right before the pump. Luckily it's an easy fix and not too expensive.
