Default Can't find Camshaft Position Synchronizer

CPS is chirping and probably needs to be replaced but I can't find it on my 99 Ranger 4.0 6 cyl. What needs to come off to locate? I'm sure it's been covered here before but I'm not having any luck with a good picture or description.

Are you sure that you don't mean 3.0 V6? I've never heard of a 4.0 having one fail.

Definitely a 4.0. Maybe the noise isn't the CPS. I will have mechanic check it out.

Mechanic diagnosed as broken flex plate not cam position sync. Nothing a $1,000 and a week in the shop won't fix.

just FYI you have to remove the upper intake to even remotely begin to see it. even then its hidden very well by the lower intake it CAN BE removed with the lower intake still on just a complete pain in the butt. IDK about trucks with out a body lift because mine does have one which did help some but not much.

Mine failed bad usually on the 4.0L OHV it causes a Misfire at high RPM like on the freeway mine the motor felt dead if you full throttled it.

Mechanic told me it was the flex plate but after they got into it they decided the problem was the cam position synchronizer after all. That jives with the info I got from this forum.

I Believe I have the same cam sync problem on a 2002 Ranger/Edge and need to replace it. Also having trouble locating the Cam Sync. Is it the same location as on the 99?.
