noise in engine compartment

my buddy has an 02 xlt 4x4 auto trans with the 4.0 and we cant figure out what his rattle/slapping is. he starts up when the motor is cold and you can hear it very well but once it warms up it goes away. you can still hear it once in a while when the motor is warm and he starts up but other than at start up you dont hear it. he thinks its the timin chain rattlin i think its a valve rattle we just dont know. if anyone can help us out that would be much appreciated.

sounds like the rattle from the timing chain tensioner. 01 and 02 are notorious for doing that. If it is that you should be able to hear it some between 2500 and 3000 RPMs.

^^^ what he said, my 01 does it but i started using 0W Mobil 1 oil and the rattle has almost completely gone away. when it does rattle its not nearly as noticeable.
