Question Converting from a 3.0 OHV to a 4.0 SOHC

Hey guys,

I have a 3.0 and I'm looking for a 4.0 doner vehicle. If anyone happens to run across a totalled 2003-2007 Ford Ranger or Ford Explorer please let me know. I was also wondering if anyone here has ever done this swap before. I'd be really interested in hearing about it if you have.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

o know of a guy on another ranger forum that swapped his OHV 4.0 to an SOHC 4.0 and he loves it. also a friend of a friend of mine swapped an SOHC into an older explorer, so it can and has been done.

Ok, I feel better now knowing that this has actually been done before.
I found a doner Ranger(2008 2 WD) and now I need to know the difference between the 2 wiring harnesses. The 4.0 has three connections on the firewall and it looks like my 3.0 only has one big connection. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like there used to be a plastic cover over the 4.0's 3 connections. Can someone tell me if I'm going to need to remove the dash from both Rangers and swap some parts there too? And one more thing ... will I be able to reuse my 3.0 A/C compressor?

Here's a pic of the 4.0

Here's a pic of my of my 3.0

You will need the wiring harness as for the 3 plugs vs. 1 I dunno about that.

Are you planning on swapping the transmission also? I believe you will have to the 3.0 and 4.0 wont match up.

My 2010 4.0 SOHC has no cover of the 3 plugs.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to get the 4.0 transmission too because the bellhousing bolt pattern is different. I'm assuming the 4.0 block is wider.

Just thought of something. It wont matter the 1 big plug or 3 little plugs you need the computer as well so noting to worry about.

I'm just going to throw out some random thoughts but I think you are going to have some troubles unless you change all the harnesses including the dash and frame harnesses.
I have never done the swap but...
If your 3.0 is flexfuel the frame harness is different due to the fuel compensation valve wiring.
Because of the plug difference on the ecm I can tell you are going to a different version of Pats and OBD-2
The wiring on newer trucks is completely different...ie fuse box under ps kickpanel instead of the panel by the drivers door.

I would recommend getting the newer motor and getting a harness and computer from a similar year truck or explorer including all the door and ignition locks and keys as well as the gem and theft module. Something else to think about...a 5.0 would be the same amount of work...

Thanks for the input, but my 3.0 isn't a Flex Fuel engine.
Mine is a 2004 and the other one is a 2008. So, They're both OBD-2
I would like to put a 5.0 engine in there from an Explorer, but I'm worried about the weight of the 302.

sounds to me like the best option would be to find a rollover, or something that would make a complete donor ! Motor, trans, TC, ect.

Just my opinion, but in looking to do your swap to the 4.0, and having to find a new transmission, I would look at the older ones (Pre-95), the A4LD. Ford really dropped the ball on the 95-up Bordeaux Automatic transmissions, the 4r44e and 4r55e. They are known to have serious issues with reliability, and are too costly to overhaul for the value.

A nameless poster claims that another nameless poster on the internet somewhere did it and "a friend of a friend" also did. This proves something to you?
