Default Re: If you have an 01+ 4.0 with lean codes (PO171 and/or PO174) look here!

Thank you very much for this thread

I just found out that I have this exact problem the other day.

Now.. how the hell did you get the elbow off?

I moved the radiator house and took off the throttle cover to get room to try and pull it off, I tried everything.. flat head screw driver, pb blaster etc it seems like the elbow is just embedded into the other tube. Should I just cut the cracked elbow with wire cutters or something then slide it off?

For a temporary fix I put some electrical tape over the small crack.. to my surprise this actually helped out the idle while driving but it still starts like shit it will surge to 1k rpms then drop to 300 almost stalls, does it twice in a row then goes to normal rpms.

I do want to fix it though because I have noticed a drop in gas mileage and the check engine light it on. Any suggestions on how I can get this thing off? I have the new elbow ready to go.

Thank you guys for this thread. I've been having a P0171 right bank lean code.
First I found the airbox was not latched. I latched it down, and the code came back in under 5 miles, no fix.
I installed a new air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, and changed the oil/filter while I was at it. Code came back after 100 miles, no fix.
Next I changed the fuel filter, added Injector Cleaner to the gas, and used the security bits to remove the MAF sensor so I could clean it properly, Code came back after 120 miles, no fix.
Finally, I found this thread and sprayed some starter fluid in the area of this elbow, and the engine revved. The elbow looked fine, but I was able to pop it off by pulling, and prying the lip of it with a screwdriver on the engine side. It had a large rip in the bottom side of the hose.
The local parts stores didn't have the exact part, or any hose with an elbow of the right diameter, but O'Reilly had a stubby plastic vacuum elbow of the right diameter. Using this and a couple short sections of straight hose there was plenty of room to make a good repair.

I just had this problem myself. Mine looked just like in the original pics from the OP. The elbow ran me $13 from my local autozone. Hopefully, that fixes my lean codes. Now on to the misfires...

Hello I have a 2002 Ford Ranger 3.0 non flex fuel 2wd and I'm having the same check engine codes P0171&P0174 and I've already replaced my plugs,MAF sensor and cleaned my intake and check for leaks with ether everywhere. I'm about to replace my 02 sensors next. I'm running out of ideas and money.

Would this also work on a 99 ranger?

Great info. I have the exact problem as you. One exception is my truck is a 1999. Another is the surging when I stop and even surging that I can notice when my speed is under 45 mph. Another is the ac quits blowing out the vents when I accelerate but will come out the vent as it should when I run at a constant higher speed 6o to 65 mph or so.
I changed out the vaucum hubs with manual and plugged the vacum line to each hub. I've double checked the plugged lines and they seem to be sealed. There should be a place closer to the vacum source to plug the vacum to the front hubs.
Now the wierd part. My mpg went to 12-13 mpg with the common 300,301,171,174 codes. I washed the engine and the mpg went to 17.8 but the surging remained. The check engine light does not come on as much and the codes have been mainly 300,301.
If it matters my Ranger is 1999,4x4,4.0,auto
Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks Chuck

Thanks for great post. Drove me nuts with the flakey idle. Changed fuel & air filters, cleaned PVC, etc. Still same codes. Finally stumbled on the elbow with hole and of course was told dealer item. I wrapped some super waterproof tape around the elbow (from the local 99 cent store) and all was well on codes and idle normal again. Now I've found Forum and will be attempting to diagnose a new engine noise. By the way, buddy had a plastic water housing in the same area with a split seam and repaired it with JB Weld inside and out.

New here. Love the thread, going to check mine when I get off work. Mine is a 97 6, 4.0 with 108k on it. We're in sw oklahoma. We bought this truck a couple months ago. Changed idler pulley, tensioner, alternator and all spark plugs and leads.
First time it happened to me it was hot out, maybe 105. The truck started spitting and jerking, like it was choking out, loss acceleration (no response) then dies, wont stay running if you immediately try to crank it. let it sit for a couple hours, it cooled off some outside, started fine and made it a couple miles back home. Did get the engine check light. P0171. Checked fuel pressure, ck good. We found a wet plug so changed them and leads out, they needed it anyway. Cleared code. Drove a few days np.
Son drove it, again hot outside, about 107, went about 20 miles and described what it did to me. No engine ck light though. Ford dealer couldnt duplicate and no codes. Wasnt hot out either. My question is, would this crack in the elbow cause this problem intermittently due to outside air temp?
My son is home on leave and wanting to take it back to NM with him, but i'm not going to let him do so until i know it can make the trip through the desert. Thanks for any info
K.

I have a '97 4.0 that kept throwing these same codes. After replacing the entire EVAP system, fuel pump, coil pack, 02 sensors, and various other sensors to the tune of about $600, I finally replaced the computer.SHAZAM!, problem fixed, runs like new again.
