I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab with an automatic trans that has displayed bank 1 and bank 2 lean codes, as well as #6 cyinder misfire. I replaced the plugs and still had the same codes, so I replaced the spark plug wires and when I checked the codes today it came up bank 1 lean and #3 cylinder misfire. I find no vacuum leaks visually, as well as spraying starting fluid around manifold and hoses. I have to think it is probably still a vacuum leak, due to the fact that it dropped the Bank 2 lean, and the fact that the cylinder misfire went from #6 to #3. Any ideas.

I got the 174 code and found the problem at the PCV elbow. I'm glad I found this thread, it confirmed my findings. One question: does an aftermarket hose bend enough without kinking to replace the elbow?

DannM:

Yep, a standard hose will bend to your wishes without messing up the airflow; its a just a matter of length (sorry, no other way to say that). Just make sure it's neither too long or too short. There will always be a kink, but it's not enough, in my experience anyway, to make any difference to the engine and computer. Good luck!

Get a spark plug boot that is 90 degrees, pull out the wire. Those elbows are not that expensive at dealer. The hole hose assembly on an expeditionis only about $45. Most ford 6cyl p0171 & p0174 if it ain't pcv or a vacuum leak, then plastic intake plenum gaskets.

Thanks Dan, but I have since replaced both hoses in question, and can still find no vacuum leaks, however the truck still misses at an idle, and going down the road, however after 7 or 8 drive cycles has still not set any codes. Like I stated before though that fuel filter, spark plugs, and wires are all new. O2 sensors seem to be reading fine.

Oh, by the way, I have also replaced the PCV valve.

we're still battling it too. except it hasn't thrown a code lately. Same choking out problem, just no check engine light. Son changed the fuel pump, still didn't work. But what he found was, when the truck starts to choke out and dies. He goes back to the fuel filter and busts open the line and takes pressure off, then it seems to work fine. For a while of course...

I bought all 3 ox sens and a mass air sens and still had the codes....it wasnt until i started to remove the pcv hose and walla i found a cracked rubber elbow right at the throttle body. U need to take the cover off where the air intake goes its 3 screws. And thats where i found a cracked hose....o taped it up and cleared the codes and the engine light has not come on since.
Good luck.

This fix worked for 3 months. The code came back. Any suggestions where else to look? Any common place?
Update:I found it. First vacuum hose after the MAF was loose.

Question Re: If you have an 01+ 4.0 with lean codes (PO171 and/or PO174) look here!

My 03 FX4 4.0L V6 has thrown the same codes. I found the vacuum hose under the upper coolent hose had a huge hole in it. Changed that ,then got the Check engine lite with same codes again. Changed the PCV and still have the lire and codes. Truck runs strong with no loss of power. What am I missing?

Mine has thrown this code(s) twice in the 8 years ive owned it, both times I've just pulled out the MAF and cleaned it and bam, fixed. The last time occurred shortly after I cleaned and oiled my K&N filter. I hear its a common problem, sometimes excess oil from the filter trips out the MAF.
