Default 4.0L gas engine sounds like a deisel

I have had this truck for about 3.5 years. I first noticed it sounded like a deisel not too long after I bought it. I haven't had the time or money to investigate the problem. I was thinking it could be the lifters, exhaust leak or some other common problem I don't know about. It seems louder during idle, than when I am excelerating. I am looking for any serious suggsetions on what it may be, before even attempting to start looking. The truck in question is a 1996 Ranger XLT, has had an engine swap, a 4.0L from a Ford Explorer if memory is correct, replacing a 4.0L original. The original mileage on the newer engine should be around 200-224,000KM. No mods done, all factory. Please do not post you have the same problem, only post answers to resolving issue!

My truck has a little bit of lifter noise that I can hear through the intake but sounds nothing like a diesel.

Sounds like the infamous "marbling" idle noise. Its not uncommon on the 4.0 OHVs and I dont know what causes it. There was a theory awhile back about it being due to carbon buildup or something but I dunno. Mine has always done it. Mine does it more right after an oil change, and less when the engines warm and has been driven around for awhile. There's nothing really that can be done about it and it doesnt mean anything is 'wrong' with the engine. it has no bearing on performance or mileage and apparently no bearing on longevity or durability either. This motor has 145k miles on it and has been rock solid despite the noise. I stopped worrying about it about 9 years ago.

this is from a post on R-F

Unfortunately, this change also resulted in the piston being able to move around in the bore which can sound like marbles rattling around in a can. For whatever reason, the noise seems to be most noticeable right after an oil change. From all accounts (thus far), the condition does not pose any threat to engine performance or longevity. Here's what Ford has to say about it:

Some 1998-2000 Ranger/Explorer equipped with a 4.0L OHV engine may exhibit an engine noise that may be perceived by the customer as a "Diesel" type noise and is known as Marble Noise. Marble Noise is clearly heard when the vehicle is at idle, under 2000 RPM or under very light/no load. High mileage studies of the condition show no adverse effect to engine life or performance. Cleaning carbon from the combustion chamber will have no effect on the Marble Noise condition. Marble Noise is a characteristic noise of this engine and cannot be serviced with an engine exchange.
